Question on insurance approval.

I just wanted to know how you are informed by the insurance you are approved? Do they send you a letter? Do they call the surgeons office or do they call you? Do they send you a letter? Do you call them? Thanks.

My doc's office handled all of that for me. Once they got notice of approval, they called me and told me the good news. However, I was denied the first time I applied and I was notified by the doc's office first, but I received a denial letter in the mail from the insurance company about a week later. I can't remember if I ever received an approval letter from them or not.

I was told that it takes about a week or two for the insurance company to make a decision once they receive the request. Has it been longer than that for you? If so, I would call the insurance company or your doctor's office, if they are the ones who applied for you.

Good luck!

I got a call from the surgeon's office as they were notified first of the approval for coverage.  Then I received a letter from the insurance company shortly thereafter.

Make sure you get it in writing from the insurance company before surgery. It's the only way to be certain you won't get stuck with a very large bill.

I called the insurance company a few days after the doctor submitted the paperwork, and they informed me of the approval.  I had the surgery about 8 days later, and about two weeks after that I got the letter from the insurance company saying they approved it. So I wouldn't wait for the letter to get started.

If you are eager, I'd suggest calling your insurance company and asking how long it usually takes to get approval, and then find out when the doctor sends the paperwork to the insurance, and follow up with a call to the insurance company.  I had BCBS of Massachusetts, and they told me they usually have a decision in 3 to 5 days of submission on the paperwork.  I called 3 days after the paperwork was submitted and they told me it was approved.

best of luck.

My weight loss clinic handled that all for me. They called me to tell me it was approved about 3 days after they submitted to insurance (I have BCBS of Mass) and I got the letter stating the same thing about 3 weeks later. I'm 11 days pre-op right now. Surgery 12.17. Good luck!
