Hello everyone! Just stopping by with a quick question. Yesterday my Dr prescribed Naproxen 500mg twice a day for knee pain. I mentioned VSG surgery and my Hypertension and he didn't seem to mind he just shrugged his shoulders and said its ok. I'm 11 months out and not sure if I should take this med. side effects mention stomach bleeding.  Yikes!!! Has anyone taken it? Your input will be greatly appreciated as always :)

Naproxen is an NSAID. I would check with  my bariatric surgeon prior to taking it. In my non medically educated opinion, Naproxen is a far scarier NSAID than Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen notes sour stomach, bloating, and bleeding (on rare occasions). Naproxen goes straight to "...may cause stomach bleeding that may be fatal." YIKES. With a sleeve, I don't think I'd risk that. Just my opinion.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. I don't know how long we have to wait to be able to take NSAIDs. I remember choosing VSG because we were able to take this type of meds vs gastric bypass. Now I'm a little skeptical about it. Maybe I should wait until Monday to call my surgeon. Thanks for your reply :)

I chose VSG for many reasons - the NSAID thing being one of them. However, since my surgery the ASMBS has come out and said no NSAIDS for sleeve patients either. BOOOOO!

I won't lie. I do take a rare Ibuprofen for intense headaches that Tylenol just can't touch. But I do so with medical permission from my bariatric team.

Hey julie! Our probably depend on the program and surgeon like Kairk mentioned above. My program says no NSAIDS, while others are fine with it. Good thinking to hold off until you check with your surgeon.

Naproxen is like ibuprofen with rocket engines strapped on. Please check with your sleeve surgeon before taking it!

Nope!  The ASMBS says no NSAIDs for us.

I was told no NSAIDS ever again after surgery. At my pre-op class, we were told a story of a guy who had moved from another state and started coming to their office with stomach pains. It turned out that no one ever told him not to take NSAIDS and his stomach was covered in ulcers because he had been taking them on a near daily basis. Now, I can't say if that was a true story or if it was a scare tactic, but either way, I won't be taking NSAIDS.

I, literally, feel your pain, though. One of the reasons I always fail when I start an exercise program is because my knees start hurting. The same thing is happening post-op, only I've managed to hurt my hip somehow and it's inflamed as well. I asked my doc what I could do about it and he said take Tylenol for the pain. (Yeah, that helps...) I've also bought the glucosamine and chontroitin patch from PatchMD to see if it will help any. It just arrived today and I'm wearing my first one now. I'll let you know if I see any change.

Good luck! I hope you get to feeling better soon. ((Hugs))

If you haven't already, you should consider seeing an orthopedist or a podiatrist.  Knee and hip pain often originates from the foot and can be resolved with orthotics, better shoes, or physical therapy.
