As a stand-alone WLS, the VSG has been done for better than 10 years. As a surgery for the treatment of ulcers or cancer, it's been done over a century.

I chose the complete Duodenal Switch (a Sleeved stomach plus an intestinal bypass), 12 years ago. I'm at my lowest adult weight ever. My bloodwork is good, but I take a handful of vites 4 times a day. With just a Sleeve, you won't have any malabsorption, so your vitamin and mineral supplement needs will be less. You probably WILL need to take some vitamins and minerals, however, since you won't be eating much food.

I know that for ME, the Sleeve alone would not have been enough to maintain my weight loss. Basically you need to ask yourself if you need the extra help of malabsorption of calories. If not, go with the Sleeve. If you think you DO, then go with the complete DS.
