Went off omeprozole and now am feeling HUNGER!

I am 9 1/2 months out. At my 6-month appt my Surgeon told me to start decreasing my Omeprozole slowly from every day to every other day, et****il I was off it. If I had no acid reflux I was to no longer take it. So I did do that according to plan, and had no acid reflux so i have not taking it at all for about a month. I have noticed in the last month that I am feeling hunger again like before my VSG, rather intensely. I still eat protein first and eat slowly despite the hunger, but I am NOT enjoying feeling so Hungry again. Is this because of going off the Omeprazole or is it common around 9 months out? I would appreciate feedback. :-)

Acid often mimics hunger, so this is no surprise.  Clearly you still have acid issues, even if not reflux.

The "no hunger" feeling does go away after a while.  Before my surgery my surgeon told me that I will not feel any hunger for about 6 months.  I started to feel hunger again around 10 months out (I also got rid of the omeprozole around that time) only it's not like it was prior to my sleeve.  Before, I would eat even when I wasn't hungry at all.  Now, if I feel hunger it's because I literally haven't eaten in 4-5 hours.  Once I do eat, the hunger goes away again and I don't continue to graze like I would pre op.  If you aren't experiencing any acid reflux, I would recommend talking to your doctor before going back on the meds.  If you feel like you're hungry all the time, even after eating, try increasing your fluid intake.  Sometimes thirst can mask itself as hunger.

Many people experience an increase in hunger between 9 and 12 months post op.

Before rushing to the conclusion that you are having acid issues try a little test. Eat a sold, dense protein meal and make sure you truly eat enough to know both physically and intellectually that you are not hungry and shouldn't be hungry for several hours.

If you begin to feel "hunger" - sort of an empty-rumbling-I-think-I need-to-eat feeling within a half hour after eating, it's most likely an acid issue.

If it takes several hours for the hunger to return, it's probably just a normal return of hunger.

I had the within 30 minute after eating type of hunger and was put on Protonix and the symptom went away. I still get that feeling on a rare occasion even on Protonix, but usually after eating a meal with too little protein and too many vegetables. I also know that it's an acid issue and can dismiss it because I know it's not hunger and will go away in a little while.

Good luck figuring it out!

I am one of those that still take a PPI at 2-1/2 years out because of exactly what you're talking about.

Here's another little test you can do:  when you feel that "hunger" try popping a couple Tums.  If the feeling goes away and stays away then you have acid issues.

There are worse things (much worse) than having to go back on your PPI.

Despite what others are saying, I doubt that you are feeling true hunger - especially as intense as you're describing - this early out.  Natural hunger pangs will come back eventually but never as bad as before.  I have a feeling that's not your issue.

ETA:  In addition, going off a PPI can cause a "rebound" effect where the body goes into acid over-production mode.  Could be an explanation for what you're experiencing too.
