I don't know what type of pre-op diet you are on but I am on 6 weeks of Optifast, and I also got a constipated.  I now add 1 tsp of benefibre to each shake I have (4 per day) it took about 2 days but then things started moving regularly again.  I have read that you can also take a senecot S.  Hope this helps and you get some relief soon...it sucks!  Best of luck to you with your upcoming surgery also!!

I've learned to love fiber gummies and Coalace (?)!  Lots of folks try Miralax, too.  Find what works, but you will definitely need to have something...regularly!!  Sorry for the pain...we've all been there!

5'5" 64 year old; HW 219; SW 199; CW 129; GW 145ish (original)...now on to "ideal" (138)...got that...now a few spare (132)...got that one, too! Now for the 120's!! Made them...now for the "dream" weight...125! Well, that one's proving to be a little tougher!

I think these problems are common after surgery.  I have to take Miralax daily to manage my constipation, and I assume I will need to do this forever.

You should check with your surgeon for suggestions on how to handle it, and then you may need to take something daily to prevent future problems.

best wishes,

Carol

My surgeon recommended milk of magnesia and dulcolax. You may want to get in touch with your surgeon for a recommendation. Being constipated to the point of pain is not good and you definitely want to take care of it one way or another -- ending up in the emergency room with a nurse's fingers manually extracting it is not the point you want to get to!

Welcome to a large group of us that have the same situation.  I think to the most part it is due to decrease in fiber and veggies and increase in the protein, which is all part of our new way of eating.  It is an ongoing problem with me.  I usually use Miralax and Citricelle for a couple of days when needed (every day is ok also).  But on those occasions that it doesn't unclog me, doc told me to double up (60cc) of Milk of Magnesium.  Between the two, I am in fairly good shape.  Good luck.  Hope you find what works for you.

I take a capful of miralax every day.  No more pain for me.  Check with your doc.

We all have our own personal remedies for this situation. Mine was a capful of generic Miralax and a generic Dulcolax each day. I eventually was able to go down to a 1/2 capful of Miralax a day, then finally none at all. Several months ago I gave up the Dulcolax, too and am doing well, but I do eat a wide range of foods now that I'm about 4 years out. I still don't go daily, and occasionally still suffer from the Rock of Gibraltar syndrome.

I take Miralax. I just put a half a cap in one of my protein shakes when I need it.  (Trust me, start with half a cap. I used a whole cap once and wished for death.)

this is a common issue due to protein drinks and such.  milk of magnesia worked best for me.  my surgeon recommends miralax. stuff like benefiber doesn't seem to work much.   if you get really bad, get a suppository.  not much fun but it works.   my husband had veg and he says he once produced "an artillery shell" .    funny but not really.    diane
