Are you all hearing this comment as well?

Everyone at work is acting like I am a stick figure. Yes I have lost 120 pounds. Yes that is a small person. But I am still 5'9 and 198 pounds. Not exactly tiny.

I look in the mirror and still see the big girl, but I also realize that at 200 pounds I am still to big for my liking.

How do you all respond to comments like these? I usually reply that I still want to get to a health BMI. When they ask how many more pounds that is and I say 40-50 they tell me that is to much and act like I said I want to be 50 pds & not 150.

Any advise is welcome.... Thanks guys.

I got a lot of comments about being too thin when my BMI was still in the obese range.  Part of it for me was the loose skin that just made me look frail.  I had one cousin who kept complaining that I was too thin, and then we figured out that she and I were the same height and the same weight!  I told her she couldn't call me "too thin" anymore.  hehehe

I'd suggest just saying "thanks" to these comments, and then go ahead and do what you think is best for your health.

best wishes,

Carol

You are right on track with trying to lose down to 150.  Get as small as possible.  That will prepare you for the period of regain that happens by the third year after surgery.  Regaining twenty pounds is common and you will be glad you had a cushion to support that.

I spent a year being told I was too skinny and I needed to stop losing and start eating.  Only my surgeon encouraged me to prepare for regain.  At the time I really did not believe him and was certain that I would never regain.

He ended up being right, of course, and I had to struggle to get back to my goal weight.

People respond differently to change. Perhaps their brains are used to the old you. Maybe their brains unconsciously miss the old you? I bet you in time they will get used to the newer thinner you. Years ago I went on Atkins diet, lost 60 lbs and I had people telling me not to lose anymore weight, even though at 5'8" and 220lbs, I still thought I was still fat. Who knows why? Maybe it is a good thing....you imprinted on them, and their brain likes you the way you are, like a comfortable old shoe? Good luck!

Stop talking about your weight loss. It gives people permission to make comments. Tell them your doctor is keeping a close eye on you and leave it at that.

Do not listen to them. Lose as much as you can. When people start to listen, they eat more and most cannot stop gaining. It is a slippery slope.

Yes, I get that comment and I take it as a compliment! The plan is to get healthy and with doing so I'm getting smaller. I thank people and tell them there is more work to do to reclaim my health!

Quit telling people how much weight you want to lose - it's a rude question that doesn't even deserve an answer.  And invites these kind of comments.  If they continue to ask tell them "I will stop losing weight when my doctor tells me to".

All of us - every one of us - has heard this comment on multiple occasions.  Consider the source and consider the fact that most people don't know what "normal" size looks like anymore.  We are a hugely fat and overweight society.

When you get these comments just smile and say, "Thanks!"  And don't even respond to questions about "how much have you lost" other than to say, "A lot!"  It's another rude question that doesn't deserve a response.

The crazy thing is I don't discuss my weight loss with most people.

I work in a large office and when I have to go to other floors/ areas some of the people there just volunteer to comment about how I have changed. Some I am closer with than others and will share when asked how much I have lost. But others are just rude and make comments. It was just starting to get this comment more than others and it was a little unnerving.

With all the experience on here I knew you all would have great advise about what to say and what not to say to mostly strangers.

Thanks everyone :)

I have the exact same problem!  Even my husband has told me to stop where I am at, and I am still in the overweight category at 179 lbs, 5'6".  My goal is 160 and absolutely everybody is telling me that 160 is too small, but I am not listening as I know that most have a bit of regain and although I am going to try and not have regain, I want a bit of a buffer.  Truth is if I don't lose anymore, I am happy right here, but I do want to get to my goal too.  You do what is right for you and don't listen to others.
