Carbonated beverages??

Hi everyone!

I am about 10 weeks out from VSG and I can't even believe I am saying this...I have not had a diet soda in 10 weeks!  That is amazing for me since I was consuming WAY too much before surgery.  I know that I need to focus on water now and I don't really miss all the soda.  But I am wondering if anyone has occasional diet soda or more importantly carbonated waters?  I had a few brands that I enjoyed pre-op and would like to mix things up, but don't want to wreck my guts!  Thanks in advance!

I'm glad to hear you don't miss drinking them, hope that is the case for me. I am worried about how I am going to stop. Did you quit "cold turkey?" Did you stop drinking diet soda before surgery? HOW DID YOU DO IT????

I would not suggest trying any carbonation, ever.

I'm 20 months post-op and I can't say that I've had even a sip of carbonated drink.  Not because I'm scared or forbidden (although I've heard it can be uncomfortable) just because I've gotten so used to drinking non-carbonated stuff that carbonation really just has no appeal to me anymore.  Strange.  I also haven't had any urge to eat pizza.  Almost 2 years and no desire for pizza.

No desire for pizza?  Amazing!  I haven't had regular pizza but certainly still have the desire!

Have you tried making something like pizza?  I've been thinking about what I will do post-surgery because I'm already thinking about pizza.  LOL  I am thinking about maybe using rice or mashed cauliflower instead of crust, and just putting pizza sauce, cheese, and toppings in a bowl and just mixing it all together.  Gosh dang pizza!

Well, RIGHT THIS VERY MOMENT I am in the middle of making chicken crust pizza based on this recipe:  http://www.bariatriceating.com/2015/06/chicken-crust-pizza-m argarita-nocarbpizza/?v=7516fd43adaa

I thought this was surprisingly good although it was probably helped that I didn't try it until about the 9 month mark and hadn't had pizza for about a year.  I like it a little more than I would wish.  So, I will save a couple of pieces for the weekend and then freeze individual portions for later. (I can't have food that I really like just OUT THERE calling to me.)  It freezes beautifully.

Eggface has a ricotta bake that I think has pizza flavors.  I never tried it but it always gets rave reviews.

There is a recipe for pizza crust that is made from cauliflower, egg and cheese.  it is actually really good but make sure you get the diced cauliflower as dry as possible and bake it for 20 minutes instead of the 15 the recipe instructs. I found the recipe on pintrest.

Does your plan give you rules?  Cuz I don't want you to break your rules :)

From what I was told, fizzy drinks may cause discomfort but they weren't explicitly forbidden.  I never asked more about them because my main concern was that I adopt this new lifestyle and do my best not to drag old bad habits forward. I sort of felt that flavored non-fizzy drinks (I'm looking at you, diet Snapple) were needed just to keep my hydration up.  But, eventually I even mostly dropped them when water began to taste ok again.

All that said, I have had a diet carbonated soda a few times in the last month (so, at about 10-11 months post surgery.)  The volume was about 1/2 cup and was never paired with food.  I didn't have much desire to have more than that small amount.  A refreshing treat, to be sure, when others were chowing down on high calorie treats.    I have no plans to make it a daily thing .... I have just way too much history of pairing fizzy drinks with salty carbs.  Plus, frankly, it isn't all THAT great anymore!

So, to me, the question is less about wreaking your guts (although I am not an expert in what exactly wreaks your guts!) but rather wondering what else from your past will be drug forward with the carbonated drinks.  We are so new at this, I think we have to be super careful.
