Newbie-A few questions
I have found that an overwhelming majority of people are positive about my WLS - no one that I care about said anything negative. I told everyone at work. I will tell anyone that wants to know how I lost the weight. Maybe I will inspire someone to change their life. Not telling makes me feel dishonest. Just personal. To each their own. I would do it all over again tomorrow. My husband is going in next week.
I have had plastic surgery. Totally worth it!!
Agreed, you are doing this for you, who cares what others think. If they cross the line, give them an attitude adjustment. If your friends cross that line and I don't mean accidentally, but over and over, then it's time to re-evaluate the friendship. You can't allow yourself the luxury of a negative thought, it's all about attitude and perseverance.
I also found that everyone was positive. A few people were concerned, sure, but not negative. It never even occurred to me not to tell people. There is no such thing as a secret.

Congratulations! I have also kept my upcoming surgery (Nov. 11th) a bit secret. My husband, my mother-in-law and my best friend are the only ones who know about it. I just don't feel like hearing, "Oh, you're taking the easy way out." Easy my a**! This diet, I doubt a lot of people could last 4 days let alone 4 weeks!! It's not the easy way out and I wish there wasn't such a stigma about WLS. A lot of rude and ignorant people out there "hate" fat people and think we are so gross and need to do something about it, but when we choose the surgery, they act like we are weak or lazy... I am glad you aren't ashamed. When people ask why I am on this crazy diet, I tell them something is wrong with my liver and my doctor wants to shrink it down and see if my labs improve.... and then I told them I am having a liver biopsy on the 11th - which I am, because they are doing one at the same time! I think once your husband learns about the entire process and all of the effort you have to put forth, he'll understand it is not easy at all.... You will likely have to go through a lot of tests - bloodwork, EKG, Mental health evaluation, and a few other things.... Then, once you get approved, you have to go through a 4-week or a 2-week pre-op diet that SUCKS. lol It's especially hard when you live with people and still have to prepare food for them because you have to smell it and touch it but can't have any.... Once you start, however, keep in mind that the first 3 days of the diet are the worst.... You will start to feel better after that 3rd day. :) My surgery team provided me with a big notebook of information about pre-op diet, planning for surgery, the hospital stay, post-op diet, wound care, exercises and resources, which I think is fantastic. I don't know what insurance you have or where you live, but I hope you get a team like mine because it really makes things easy and I feel like I am in good hands and therefore not nervous at all.... It is a huge challenge.... Go take out your measuring cups and look at the 1/4 cup.... That is going to be the size of your meals for the first few weeks after surgery.... Now look at the 1/2 cup.... That may be the size of your meals for the rest of your life. Some people can go as far as 1 cup, but that visual is a good way to put things into perspective. If you decide to have WLS, VSG seems to be the best way to go. Good luck!!

Thank you so much for you kind words! Good luck with your upcoming surgery! I can't wait to hear how it goes and how are you feeling this time next week (or maybe more like 2 weeks) :) Thanks again!
Congratulations on getting back on track.
I will tell you I told everyone. People are going to talk regardless of what you do, and I found that they were overwhelmingly supportive. That is a personal decision that you have to make. If you don't want to tell your work specifically what you are doing just say you are having surgery (personal) . However, when you file your FMLA paperwork mine had "barriatric" in the name of the office. So wouldn't have really hidden anything.
I am 8 days post -op. Follow your practices directions. Whatever that is. Mine wanted me to practice not drinking 30 min before or after eating. Surprisingly that was a pain. Post Op I have my surgery "binder" that gives me all my cans/cants and I refer to it before I make a decision to eat/drink.
I think the most important thing is to be positive. This surgery is just a tool, and you have to have it in your mind that you are in 100% :)
Good luck, You are going to do awesome.
