5 months post op and I'm really loosing my hair, help

I started to really shed at about the 5 month mark and it continued for a few months after that. I went with a bit shorter, more layered hair style.

Now at almost 11 months out, I have an undercoat of new hair that is about an inch long.

It will be ok although I know how shocking and worrisome it is. There is nothing you can do to make it stop or reduce it. You just have to walk the path.

Best wishes!

My real hair loss coincided with 100 pounds down and turning 60, so I got a new, cute short hair style and hardly notice.

If your hair is long, now is the time for a haircut with some layers to blend in the new hairs about to emerge and keep you from looking like a chia pet.

Yup, it sucks balls - big time! Months 5-8 were my worst months actually. My hair guy estimates I lost at least half my hair. The good news is that it eventually stops and starts coming back. Here are my tips:

  • Wash hair only a couple times a week
  • Use satin pillowcases to reduce tension on hair
  • Do daily scalp massage to increase blood flow
  • Make sure your vitamin levels are good
  • Get all your protein (and more) in each day
  • Use Toppik or some other product to cover bare spots
  • Use a thickening gel for styling

Don't get convinced that any special shampoo or pill is going to help - it will just lighten your wallet.

I am starting to get very worried about hearing everyone saying they keep hearing that they are loosing their hair. I have long think hair, and I do not want to to loose it. I was not so worried until now! The reason for this is I have a few friends that had the VSG and they did not have much hair loss.

Is there anyone on here that did not loose a lot of hair at least to where they noticed?

Thanks,

With long and thick hair, you will notice it more dramatically for that reason. It's likely that nobody else will notice.

The telogen effluvium stage has nothing to do with vitamins or protein, and everything to do with the hair growth cycle rebooting. It's the body's reaction to the trauma of surgery. It can happen with any surgery - even childbirth.

I am hoping I will be like most that do not loose much hair. I love my hair and will be devastated to have to cut it short....

Here is hoping for the best!
