I was told that I couldn't have gum ever again, because you swallow a lot of air when you chew gum and if you swallow it, it will get caught up in your staples and may require a surgery. That being said, I still chew it anyway. The extra air (if any) doesn't bother me and I haven't swallowed gum since I was 10. (knocks on wood)

As for breath mints, I was told I could only have the sugarfree kind. I don't think it has carbs. However, I would think that you should count it if you eat some that does have carbs. You're body's going to count it, whether you do or not.

gum Can't get caught in your staples,no can anything else. The staples are on the outside of the sleeve.

Maybe it wasn't the staples, but they did say it could get stuck in there somehow.

it really can't. Stomach acid breaks down stuff Luke that,it is part of what stomach acid does.

they are probable trying to scare their patients into being compliant.

I believe they (dr & staff) said the air swallowing bit happens with a straw, that is why I wasn't sure with gum. do you notice if you chew gum, you do not eat or drink as much?

No one ever mentioned gum to me - so I chew it with no adverse affects. IDK about mints.

There were some problems years ago with gum and lapbands.
