Things to get before surgery??
I had really stocked up on various broths, sugar-free drinks, protein powders and a Magic Bullet.
When you can only handle a tablespoon at a time, a small can of broth lasts for a week. In less than a week I was well enough to resume driving and shopping. I used up what I had bought eventually but the stockpile was really not necessary.
What I would recommend is making some good homemade broth and freezing in tiny containers. Protein powder, sugar free Jello and popsicles will get you through the first week or so.
Real life begins where your comfort zone ends
I bought a lot of things that I never used, but there were few things that were important.
- a sampling of protein shakes - tastes change after WLS, so a sampler of single serving protein shakes lets you try some options before buying a large container.
- chicken broth - I found I couldn't tolerate the sweet drinks so I relied on chicken broth with unflavored protein powder for the first few months.
- unflavored protein powder, just in case you can't tolerate the sweet ones.
- a kitchen scale for weighing your food.
- sugar-free jello
- low-fat sugar-free pudding
- cream of veggie soups
- plain greek yogurt
For the first few months, I'd add unflavored protein powder to anything I could stir in order to make my protein numbers!
If your program is like mine, this will hold you for a while.
Best of luck,
Carol

- Sugar free popsicles were a must have for me. Popsicle brand only (store brands like Kroger/Publix are sweetened with sorbitol and did a number on my stomach).
- A step-stool to get up and in to my bed
- Miralax
- Ready to drink protein shakes in a few different flavors
- Plastic 3 oz cups to pour shakes in to (so that I could refrigerate the rest until ready)
- Dannon Lite & Fit protein yogurt (no fruit) - check w/your plan on when this is ok
- Various broths
- A white noise machine in the hospital since I was right outside the nurse's station
- Pads/tampons (There are a few of us that started periods that weren't due...I wasn't due for 2 weeks)
- Edited to add Crystal Light! My number one...

Buy some different brands of protein shakes to see which one you like as some are better tasting than others. I started making Beef and Chicken Bone broths before and froze them in 1 cup containers. Popsicles..sugar free. I bought skim milk powder to boost the protein in things as well as Collagen protein which is great for skin, nails and may help prevent hair loss? The vitamins and supplements, probiotics. I bought an egg poacher as I like poached eggs for the later stage of diet. Herbal teas. The Bullet blender which is wonderful for puree and blending the protein shakes etc. I bought sugar free Tylenol, Stool softener, GasX,. Right after surgery I bought a body pillow as I could not sleep and I got that from a suggestion here and it works great. You might want to get a sweater or light jacket if you don't have one because I was freezing after surgery. Of all the things I bought the Bullet was the best as I use that everyday and a regular blender won't do. Also more pillows as I still have to prop up my head high or I get weird pains when I lie down. Oh yeah....a good scale. I hated the digital ones as they all broke after a while so I got the heavy duty old fashioned kind and it works great. That was about all I can think of, hope it helps.
