Is it possible to lose over 100 pounds with the VSG?
I'm scheduled to have the VSG in a little over a month now. I'm so excited! After 7 months of pre procedure doctors appointments and 22 pounds down and months of Adkins diet and a lifetime of being morbidly obese I'm finally having my surgery! I was going to have the RNY but I decided against it due to the increase amount of complications vs the VSG. My concern is that what I've read about the VSG is that you only lose about 40% of your excess body weight after 2 years, which for me is about 80 pounds. Ideally I'd like to lose 120 pounds or more. Is it possible to lose that much weight with the VSG?
If you follow the eating plan, you will. Both my husband and I have each lost over 100 pounds and we're not done yet! In reality, it's YOU who decides how much you will lose. If you stay on the eating plan and get some exercise, you can lose 120 pounds or more, there are others on this board who have done it as well.

I have lost more than 80% of EWL and down a total of 150lbs since surgery. So, yes, more than doable.

I lost 225 pounds with the sleeve, 98% of my excess body weight, going from 385 pounds to 157 pounds. Yes, you can do it.
The important thing to remember is that Weight loss surgery isn't a cure for obesity, it is a treatment. You have to make the commitment to manage your eating for the rest of your life. But the sleeve makes it possible.
Before surgery I could not control my weight though I tried really hard. After surgery, I still tried hard, but with the sleeve, I was able to do it. The surgery changes your body so that it becomes possible to manage it. They are not sure why. The restriction helps, but there are hormonal changes and changes in the ganglia around the stomach that control our eating and digestion. For whatever reason, I found that I could manage my weight for the first time in my life with my sleeve.
If you follow your program you will lose the weight and you can maintain the loss. But its work. Again, the surgery makes it possible.
Best of luck with your weight loss journey.

That's wonderful Carol, did you do a lot of exercise. I like to exercise but am limited from nerve damage to my foot so walking is painful. Other than follow your diet to the letter what else did you do? My goal weight is 190 and I'm approx 300 now, I am a 50yr old guy. It's only been a few days since surgery and I love to hear stories like yours. I understand it is work but is that work more the diet or the exercise or both equal. I have no issues with diet, I think it is pretty easy so far....too easy. I feel like I am not working hard enough because I'm not hungry and have no problems getting my water and protein in. In last 5 days I have lost 6 lbs, mostly water weight I think. I also have a lot of energy and am trying to keep moving. This just seems too good to be true and I'm waiting for something bad to happen. Thanks..Billy
I did exercise regularly, but not extensively. I would do 15 to 20 minutes per day on the recumbent bike. I did it every day because I knew that if I didn't do it every day, I'd be making excuses and not carry thru. But a lot of people on this forum do a lot more than this.
Best of luck on your weight loss journey,
Carol

Great, that is more than acceptable, I was under the impression I was going to have to walk miles every day. I can tolerate the pain for this long no problem. I like to exercise, I always did. I was never heavy till I hit 40 and had accident that left me in bed for year. I gained 130 lbs in a little over a year! Prednisone made me eat like a horse and I never felt full. I am going to do a half hour on my treadmill right now, what a relief. Thank you!
Yep. But you have to follow your plan. The sleeve doesn't magically work without making permanent changes in your lifestyle.
