Bathroom odor
Embarrassing ...I am scheduled for VSG Oct 16, so I am trying to get all of my post surgery needs bunched up. One of my friends who had RNY surgery told me that "bathroom odor" was much worse after her surgery. Is that true for vsg patients also and how can that be helped? She uses a product called "poo pouri" and says it works wonders, but it is very expensive.
I haven't noticed a difference, but I may not be the norm. I have poo pourri as well, but you can make your own. They have recipes for it on Pinterest.
5' 5" tall. VSG on August 4, 2015/ Starting weight 239.9/ Surgery weight 210.9/ Current weight 137.4/ Goal weight 140/ No longer overweight, now a NORMAL weight. Now that I'm at goal, it's time to move on to maintenance!!!!!!!!
Totally no difference at all for me. It's pretty much exactly the same as before. The first one post-op may be worse than normal, since you're ahem...releasing that terrible stuff they make you drink for your leak test, but that's about it.

No such trouble here. Certainly couldn't hurt to get a few extra air fresheners to keep around the house, though!

The reason for the odor is the shortened small intestine that occurs with RNY and DS. For some reason, incompletely digested contents smell worse. You'd think they would smell better... In VSG, the intestines are left alone, so the odor issue will be the same as before, although it may change based on the content of your diet.
My brother had a DS 10 years ago. The odour that is present since the operation is so bad it makes even the dog run away. Truly unbelievable how bad it is.
Nothing of the sort with my VSG. Frankly that was one of the major decision point for me when looking at RNY or DS vs. VSG

Those with RNY and DS metabolize food much faster through the digestive system, so it's not broken down as much as with the regular anatomy (that those with VSG still have as nature designed). For this reason, their stools are often looser with a stronger odor than normal. That being said and I speak from experience, much is controlled by what we eat. You shouldn't expect anything different than what you have today once you're healed.

Most VSGers don't have the same issues as RNYers and DSers with bathroom odor. I can tell you the issue didn't change one bit for me.
And Poo Pouri really isn't that expensive. Poo Pourri
