How many calories for quick weight loss after starting purees?
on 9/21/15 4:14 pm
I meet with my doctor tomorrow for my 2 week follow-up to my sleeve surgery. I've been stuck at 263.8 pounds for four days now (280 pre-op diet weight). I'm averaging about 600-700 calories a day and getting 70-80 grams of protein. The only exercise I've done so far is walking and I'm only up to about 5,000 steps a day.
Tomorrow I start purees. I hope that will somehow kick off more weightloss.
Did you have a quick weightloss? If so, can you tell me exactly what you did? I'd prefer answers from women because I noticed that men's weightloss seems to be quicker in general.
Hi Abby,
It is super duper common to "stall out" a bit after surgury. 4 days is not very long, so try not to sweat it. Assuming you are actually measuring and weighing (thus a true 700-800 calories) than you are on the right path, and the process will work. What I encourage you to do is to measure yourself- the weeks where the scale doesn't move you will likely notice inches melting off. In the periods where the weight is stagnating (assuming you are on plan of course) then it is just a brief blip where your body is adjusting to all of the changes going on. No worries- just stick to your plan! Get your water in too...

Stalls are common the first month, 4 days is barely a stall. You will not lose weight every day. Keep doing what you are supposed to do and it will happen. Search 3 week stall (not that it necessarily happens in the 3rd week) and you will see lots of posts. I know you are anxious to get moving, but you are doing great.
Focus on hitting your goals, fluid and protein.

I dumped weight at a phenomenal clip the first two months post-op. My method? Getting severely dehydrated and ending up in the ER twice, one for dehydration and a kidney infection; the other for dehydration alone. Do I recommend this method? NO! Better to lose more slowly in good health. Think tortoise, not hare. You'll still get to the winning line.

I think you're doing great so far! Its easy to get discouraged when the scale doesn't cooperate for a few days, but that definitely doesn't mean you aren't shrinking still!
I think the main thing with going to purees is that you may not be able to get in as much at first as you were used to with liquids. So make sure you are still choosing high protein purees and not heading for carbs. My first inclination was to have pureed Sweet Potatoes because it sounded so good! And then I realized how off plan that would be with all the carbs and sugars. And you'll probably still have to supplement with at least one protein shake a day to get in your 80 grams.
I keep reading that the more you vary the foods and exercises you give your body, the better your metabolism responds. So I think just by the fact that you'll be adding in different foods than you've had for the past 2 weeks it could give you a jump start. Also try some other low impact exercises, like wall push-ups and crunches and small handweights. When I stop losing for a few days I focus on trying a different machine at the gym, or work to meet a new running goal, or a new weight lifting goal, etc. If anything it helps me get through the funk and before I know it, BAM there goes a couple more pounds gone!
You're doing great! Keep it up and the number will go down!
600-700 calories per day is where I am at four months out. That seems high for two weeks out. Double check your plan.

I spoke with my NUT today and she said to aim for 500 to 800 calories at this point. I've noticed since I went off pure liquids today I have a lot more restriction though so I think my calories may go down.
Your plan sounds right in line with mine! I am 3 months out and at 800 calories a day so far (more if I am more active that day). I can't complain with the results I've had so far! You likely will feel more restriction with purees, but will likely start prioritizing protein so you may not drop mu*****alories. Purees still tend to "slide" down more so than solids.
