No more tasting

I love to cook and bake.  At Christmas time the amount of baking I did to give away as gifts was described by a guy (who saw a picture of the the treat laden table) at work as food porn.  Today was hard. It was the first time since surgery I've truly cooked and baked and I didn't realize how much tasting I did as I cooked!

I made my mom a loaf of whole wheat grain bread and didn't even realize I had tasted the dough until it was too late. And boy did I feel guilty!!  Then for dinner I made stuffed cabbage rolls with riced cauliflower in place of the rice.  Those came out great but as we sat down, I put a general warning out there that I have no clue what they taste like, eat at your own risk!

One more thing I need to be aware of and watch as I cook :)

Yeah its tough not tasting when your cooking.  I like the idea of using the cauliflower.  I might try that.

I have had to give myself the same rule, no more tasting.  I teach cooking skills to my students. It was someone's birthday so the students voted on 2 different cakes to make.  We made them, they turned out beautifully.  I was cutting small portions for everyone and I thought well what can one bit hurt?  But I took 2 bites of each cake which was 4 bites which was more carbs and sugar then I have had in 3 months!  I about passed out,  I felt sick and dizzy and like "what the heck was I thinking."   I have taken great pride in being a good cook/baker and have always tasted things to ensure the quality.   I haven given it up, I now let the students feedback & a few trusted fellow teachers to taste test new items.

I have also given up tasting new products, you know like you find a low carb high protein cracker or something & I just want one taste when I get home from the store but I have stopped that too.  Because we need so much protein I don't take bites outside of my planned meals anymore.  It's kind of empowering!  and yes your stuffed cabbage rolls sound delish!

Here a bite, there a bite, everywhere a bite bite. It adds up quickly. I have given up baking breads, cookies, etc. They're too tempting. I don't trust myself not to grab a cookie, or six cookies! If I'm elected to bring pie to my son's Thanksgiving dinner (which I usually am), I buy a wrapped pumpkin pie at Sam's Club. This eliminates the tasting of the pumpkin filling, the nibbling of the dough. Plus, Sam's Club's pumpkin pies taste much better than my homemade ones. However, I won't be confirming that fact this Thanksgiving. Turkey, a bit of sweet potato, and salad will be plenty of feasting for me.

I love to cook and bake too. In the beginning, I didn't do much baking, but now I do it all the time. I still taste and enjoy, but within reason and my other food choices reflect when I eat things that are high in sugar. For example, on Saturday I made adorable penguin cupcakes for a reception. I tasted the cake because it was a new recipe and I used duck eggs in addition to chicken eggs. I don't use a recipe when making buttercream so I taste it to make sure it tastes okay. But, for dinner instead of eating thin crust pizza like I do on occasion, I just had a chicken sausage with marinara. But, I know everyone is different. Some people can't stop with a taste and eat 4 cupcakes.

More than anything I tend to taste as I'm baking to make sure I didn't forget something!  After they are done, I can  walk away from them.

I don't see a problem with that, personally. But everyone is different. Last year when I was closer to my surgery date it was a different story.
