Two years ago I was one week away from gastric bypass surgery and I canceled thinking I could continue to lose the weight on my own. Well...guess what I am only 8lbs away from my highest weight.  I am back in the 6 month program and I am considering the sleeve and was looking for advice and also wondering how much weigh I would lose. I am 50 years old and 241lbs. I appreciate any words based on your experiences. Thank you!

Not sure how much you'll lose altogether, it depends on how well you follow the program.  I'm 6 weeks out, and here are my stats so far: starting weight 239.9, surgery weight 210.9, current weight 187.7.  I'm 58 years old, and have been heavy since I was in sixth grade, up and down for most of my life.  This surgery is the best thing I have done for myself, besides knee replacements in 2010.

BTW, I can't get my tracker to change, so my weight is not reflected on it.

5' 5" tall. VSG on August 4, 2015/ Starting weight 239.9/ Surgery weight 210.9/ Current weight 137.4/ Goal weight 140/ No longer overweight, now a NORMAL weight. Now that I'm at goal, it's time to move on to maintenance!!!!!!!!

My husband is in the same quandary as you are. He's in his mid-60s, 6'1", and early this year his high weight was somewhere in the 320s. He started the 6-month insurance approval process of nutrition counseling, etc.

In May, he developed a flare-up of his old nemesis, ulcerative colitis. Then he had a wisdom tooth removed that healed slowly and painfully. In August, he came down with a nasty sinusitis and bronchitis. He lost 60 pounds from his gut problem and from the nearly constant pain throughout the summer. Thank goodness, he recovered about two weeks ago, his appetite returned, and sure enough, his weight is starting to creep back up again. He will complete the 6-month insurance requirements next week, but he says he won't have the surgery if he can keep losing weight on his own.

But with the weight starting to creep back up, he's reconsidering the surgery again. It's a tough decision that no one else can make for him (or for you or anybody else).

If you set a realistic weight loss goal and stick closely to the nutrition and exercise plan the surgeon and his team will provide for you, you will lose the weight. That's how well the sleeve works. Getting the sleeve is one-half of the solution; your commitment to healthy eating and living is the other half.

Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Thank you.  I wish your husband the best and hopefully I can commit and make the right direction decision.

Hi! :)  I am in a similar boat, although I did start over a while back now.  I had trouble with the center having a large turnover and I would like my nutritionist or whoever I was working with and they would leave.  The last nut had me in tears and I had a panic attack and didn't go back for almost a year.  I also gained ALL the weight back PLUS and was at my highest weight ever! UGH  Now I am 33 pounds from surgery and I am choosing the sleeve which my doctor (intake doctor) said was the best choice.

If you google  something to the tune of "how much weight will I lose with the sleeve surgery?" you will see a link for a weight loss calculator.  You type in like height, weight, and surgery type (it does give options) and it will tell you approximately how much you will lose if you stick to the program. :)

I thought it was neat, and it showed that having the sleeve was very close to having the bypass surgery, maybe a difference of 30 pounds in my case, probably much less at your weight.  These are also "average" results.  :)  Best wishes!! You got this!! :)

I too did the same thing, Last year I was all through with everything and had a surgery date of October 27th, well I cancelled one week before surgery. I gained some of the weight back that I lost while in the 6 months and in the preop diet, and was starting to reach that all time high of mine again. So I made my mind up this time to do it and I had VSG surgery on August 13, 2015. Starting weight was 278, day of surgery I weighed in at 268, and today I am down to 248. I am just a little over 5 weeks out starting to eat almost everything again, just very small quanities. I am 56 years old, I get disappointed because I think with the amount of food that you are able to eat that the weight would come off faster than it does, but I think my age plays a little bit into it....maybe! but I guess it is coming off and thats all that matters. Good luck with your decisions.
