Hello, I'm 10 days post op and was wondering if I can eat tomato soup? The paper says low fat cream based soups and wasn't sure where tomato fell. Thanks!

I'd be very careful as the tomato will be very acidic. I tried a bite post-op and it didn't go well. I'd stick very close to your plan.

I prepared it with milk and ate it very early out.  It made me sick and I still don't drink it.

Err on the side of caution and stick with the chicken, celery, and mushroom cream soups. Your stomach is still outraged at the violence that was done to it; treat it kindly.

My doc's rule for my 2nd week post-op was - full liquids, as long as there were no pieces of any size floating around in it.

I do not like tomato soup, so I never tried it.

But I did come up with the "Frankensleeve new food test" which worked every time for me.

  • When I was eating a new food for the 1st time,
  • I would eat 1/2 teaspoon, wait 5 minutes
  • Eat a 2nd 1/2 teaspoon, wait 5 minutes

If Frankensleeve did not act up in those 10 minutes, I knew it was pretty safe to eat more.

Take your time with introducing new foods and don't push your new tummy too far.

It has a long way to go to recover from the major trauma it just went through.

We were told no because of the sugar content in tomato soup.

I was allowed to have it although the acidity bothered me as well.
