Hello, just wanted to know the diet some of you had for pre surgery.  I have a guide that allows me to have protein shake for breakfast, lunch and a 6 0z. piece of lean meat, and a 1/2 cup of veggies for dinner or a salad for dinner, drinking water or crystal light.  I've been reading and I have seen two weeks with only liquids.  Please share with me what you were allowed. I have the surgery on the 29th of this month.  Thanks for your help.

You'll find lots of different answers on this as all surgeons have different plans.  Mine was unusual in that I didn't have any pre-op diet at all (except nothing but liquids the night before surgery).  I think most people have a liquid diet of 1-2 weeks before surgery...not sure.  Good luck on the 29th!

Thanks for your help.  I noticed your surgery was last year, and you noted complications afterwards.  Do you mind me asking what your complications were?

My doc allowed me to drink only low carb high protein shakes for my pre-op diet. 20grams of protein and no more than 5 carbs per shake. I stuck to EAS Carb control shakes, I wish I had found Premier Protein shakes sooner - they as so much better. :-)

Just a note on having complications.

My only complication was caused by getting the hiccups, just before being released.

I started hiccuping about an hour after the pain meds wore off and it seemed like they went on forever (but they really only lasted a few minutes).

It kinda stretched my sleeve's staple line an I was in agony for about 8 days.

I couldn't drink the liquid pain meds, they made me wretch. So I went without.

Other than that, I've had a smooth recovery. And kept off 170lbs for 3 years.

My pre-op diet included unlimited: protein shakes, very low-fat or no fat protein, sugar-free popsicles or pudding but no fruits, vegetables or caffeine. The diet lasted 2 weeks.

My pre op was protein shakes or meal replacement bars for breakfast and lunch, then for dinner lean meat and 2 cups of vegetables - no carbs and soda (I drank alot of diet soda).  Then of course the water.

I didn't have any trouble at all and was thankful to have a meal in the evening.

I thanked my doctor for his pre op diet because I had read here about others having liquid only.  His was "that is really cruel to someone with a 60oz pouch (stomach) to go to liquids only.

Good lunch with your surgery and journey.  I love my new tummy.

How long was your pre-op diet?

My pre-op diet was two weeks of liquids only. I had 4 protein shakes a day, and then unlimited sugar-free, fat-free liquids such as broth, water, etc. I would have killed for a taste of veggies or meat!! Thankfully, it's all a distant memory now.

I had two weeks of clear liquids.  No milk or protein shakes, just sugarfree juices, broth, water, and sugarfree popsicles.
