Sliding back toward being diabetic- suggestions?

A1c August 2015 was 5.3, August 2014 was 5.7

Fasting Average Glucose August 2015 105, August 2014 117

The messed up thing is that by and large over the last year I have been very cognizant of this and reasonably consistent in diet. Yes, too much sugar on occasion... but switched up the diet and dropped carbs down when compared to the previous year.  It helped, but I am looking to get it down to under 100 for the glucose and drop the A1c a couple more tenths. I just don't want to develop full blown diabeties given all of the other health issues I have going on and for the most part reasonably managed at this point.

An A1c of 5.3 isn't bad at all but the fasting sugars are high. You're under so much stress with all the issues you've been dealing with - that can spike sugars.

Sure hope those numbers come down soon.

Yep, fairly Ok with the A1c since it came down, but would like if possible to knock down another tenth or two The fasting sugar needs work though.

true insulin resistance comes from having too much body fat ... not sure if you are there yet. But getting off some pounds will certainly help.  Exercise, twice a day, esp after meals, even if it's just fast walking for 30mins.  less sugar, more fiber and probiotics (esp in the mornings) - these will help keep your blood sugar in check throughout the day.

Interestingly, I just noticed that my scale is showing quite a bit more body fat percentage than it used to. I know that it is not a perfect measure by any means, but between the gain (about 5 pounds over goal now whereas I used to hover 10 pounds under) and the lack of exercise the fat has gone up and I lost what pathetically little amount of muscle I had going between surgeries. Even walking is problematic, as it causes a lot of swelling and pain on the left side where I am having issues with scarring around the implant. Consequently, I move around as needed at work, but otherwise am very careful to try and minimize any thing that might make that worse.

its a difficult choice for sure ... if activity leads to discomfort or pain its not likely to happen.  but if you contrast that with worsening health long term you might be able to find a way to get more in.  I'm saying this having been in this state for the past decade and continually, every day, even now.  my back is busted up, my liver is barely functioning and painful when i get my heart rate up due to an embolism there, my feet and legs swell, I have skin that literally gets in the way and pinched with just about everything i do at the gym ... it sucks but I look at the bigger long term picture and that keeps the exercise going.   So talk to your doctor and see what you can do for exercise without causing yourself damage ... walking , biking, swimming ... anything to get your heart rate up a bit and burn up the sugar in your bloodstream.  I'm sure there are some ways to minimize swelling with compression garments or diuretics and pain pills.  no one wants to deal with that headache just to exercise, but if you are worried about heading towards diabetes ... that's going to be a much bigger pain in the ass!  you gotta get a plan of attack and I really think that regular, on purpose exercise is your best solution for this.

See, this is why I love you Pete. Thank you for the perspective. My doc has me doing everything I can to reduce the scarring, but big picture- I am already having to go with another surgury so it is not like that will get worse. Maybe I won't  able to wait until a break at the worst. Time to ignore the doc for a bit... nothing crazy, just enough to get moving again.

I'm too poor to afford the pills, but those really are the easiest/best way (the refrigerated kind are best).  I make due with probiotic yogurts with my all bran cereal.  You can also try keifer or home made pickles and kimchi as long as they arent vinegar based ... lots of good probiotics in there.

I eat a fair amount of yogurt, although not the version specifically marketed as probiotic. I will look for the pills and work those in. Pickles and I are not usually good friends, but I am not sure if I have ever had a non-vinegar based pickle? Thanks for the reply!
