Consult with Surgeon Yesterday
I had my consult yesterday and it went well. I really liked him thank goodness! My search is over!!!
Some of the questions I asked (thanks again for the suggestions):
- How many VSGs has he performed?
- Thousands. Has been performing VSGs for over 15 years as part of bypasses and standalone VSGs.
- Complication/leak rate?
- Didn't have a "rate" but has not (and he knocked on wood) had a complication or leak in many years and the last one was on a high risk patient.
- What sleeve size will I have?
- He and his 2 partners independently from one another before joining in this practice performed their own research. Each one arrived at 36 French being the best size both for restriction and tolerance (less vomiting).
- Average percent of excess weight loss?
- 70% in 1 to 2 years.
- Average regain rate?
- 15% or 1 in 6.
- Expectations from me?
- Follow the directions provided to me and when he sees me in 6 months he won't recognize me.
He said he can tell I'm going to do great and be very successful (hope he is right!). Said I will love my new sleeve and the help it will provide me to lose the weight finally.
I'm pretty excited!!!

Glad you found the right fit! That is so important. I asked for a different surgeon right off the bat, too. I had been to a seminar with the one I wanted. He was hardcore and a surgical bad ass and all about results and he'd been doing WLS every since his residency 20+ years before. When I was assigned to a different surgeon by my HMO I stood at the appointment counter and said I want Dr. Dennen. I got him. I am still very happy with my choice to switch.
