Someone please tell me I did the right thing!

I finally had my long awaited surgery on Monday.  I don't know what I expected but it has been much harder.  I don't love taking narcotics so am mostly using ibuprofen and Tylenol but still is more painful than I would have expected.  I'm managing to get the fluids and shakes in but it feels like a more than full time job.  All I'm looking for is for someone to tell me that this is a low point and it'll start to get better soon!!  Thanks for any support!

You did the right thing! The first 4 days are roughest... you are dealing with the gas pain on top of the surgical incision on top of vastly altering your eating pattern on top of trying to get fluids in. I promise- it gets better, and fast. Typically at the 7 day mark or so you will notice a big step forward in feeling better. By 14 days you are ready to resume normal stuff (no heavy lifting, respect the diet plan for healing). You will be more tired than normal after that and dealing with hormone dumping as the weight starts flying off, but you will be shocked at 6 months looking back and all of the amazing progress that you have made and appreciating those healthy benefits. Hang in there!

You're right about feeling better around the 7 day mark...I had surgery on a Wednesday and by that following Monday, I felt great (comparatively speaking).

I was where you are now. Regretting my decision, crying, in pain and so nauseated.

The truth, I am still in the bad parts of after WLS, I still get nauseated, sometimes think I made a bad decision, have the regrets.

the goods I am better then at 4 days out. I have been laughing again, not so sick I want to die, the pain is honestly gone. I can say this as I type from the ER. I'm back for my 2nd infusion of liquids in less then a week.  Take it day by day it will get better. Just don't be typical like me and get dehydrated, it's the worst.

What no one really told me is that the first week is hell, the first month is not so good but by six weeks it's awesome. Hang in there.

I know someone who had RNY and his words were, "The first month is ass."

I now that it is difficult, but it will get much better each day.

One important point though is, you should not be taking any ibuprofen!  It's not good for you new, smaller stomach.  You should not take any NSAIDS after WLS, because they can eat a hole in your stomach lining.  Please call your doctor to make sure.

It gets better I promise.  This is the hardest part right now, and you will get through it.

Please take your prescribed pain medicine.  Not being in pain will make you feel so much better.  Whenever I try too early to ween off of mine after a surgery I am a weepy mess.  Just take them until you don't need them.

Also, be careful you are not taking too much ibuprofen and acetominofen!  You don't want to have liver issues.

It took me a good 6 weeks before I started feeling like myself again.

The ASMBS says that we should not take NSAIDs - which means no ibuprofen.

It will get better.  You just had major surgery!
