Update and TMI questions

I am home from the hospital for dehydration. I had to spend two nights due to how dehydrated I actually was but I can say that I feel a lot better. No more nausea and drinking pain has gone down a lot. I am 5days post op and down 10 pounds and it's great!! So here are the TMI questions... My bowels have kicked in and I have had strictly liquid diarrhea. This is fairly frequent. Is it normal? I just don't want to get dehydrated again and the frequency worries me. Also I follow up with my surgeon in 11 days. He wants me on clear liquids until then. Shouldn't I be having some nutrition? 2 weeks seems like a long time without any nutrition.

Liquid in, liquid out. Very, very normal and nothing to be concerned about as long as you're drinking enough.

You'll basically be fasting for two weeks. I don't know what the doctor's rationale is, but as long as you drink water, I would wager you'll be fine. Your body will use your fat stores. I've always been fascinated by this journal article about a gentleman who fasted for 382 days

Yeah, your body has plenty of nutrition stored up. It'll take a heck of a lot more than 2 weeks to go through it all.

Drink, drink, drink. Dehydration is avoidable. Nothing will make you feel crappy faster than lack of fluids.

Thank you both, I researched a year prior to having surgery and feel like there is still so much I don't know.

The diarrhea is definitely normal (and take my advice--never trust a fart...you may end up with an unpleasant surprise). If you're concerned about dehydration even if you're drinking water, ask your surgeon if you can drink Powerade Zero--it's sugar free and has electrolytes, which should help. DO NOT TRY TO DRINK G2 (the Gatorade equivalent) without talking to your doctor first--G2 is NOT sugar-free and may cause issues.

Totally normal on liquids.

Are you allowed to drink protein shakes?  Isopure is a clear liquid that has a lot of protein.

liquids are nutrition plus you have plenty of stored fat for your body to break down and use. That is why your body stored the excess food you used to eat, that your body didn't need.

It is stored as fat ,then in a time of "famine" the bodybreaks down the fat and uses that for nutrition. The body can go for MONTHS without food, but only weeks with out liquids.

Given the choice between dehydration and the squits, I would choose the unpleasant but harmless squits anytime. Just keep on drinking. You can manage without food for a while. The potentially dangerous dehydration must be brought under control.
