Please help! Is this normal?

I will be one week post-op tomorrow, and I am still in quite a bit of pain on my left side. Also, got on the scale this morning, and the scales have only moved 3 pounds since surgery. Is this normal for the pain still and the weight loss? I guess I thought I would be up and getting around better at this point, and I thought I would have lost more weight. Please help me and let me know how you felt after a week and when the weight should start coming off?

You knew someone was going to say this... stay off the darn scale! :) Also, 3 pounds in a week is nothing to sneeze at, anyway. You actually are pumped so full of fluids during and post-surgery that it's not uncommon for people to actually GAIN weight the first wee****il the fluid comes off. It's way, way too early to be worrying you aren't losing enough. Your body is still in shock. Hang in there, and, if you can, set aside the scale for at least another week - better if you can make it longer, especially since you have the infamous "3 week stall" coming up.

As to the left side pain - if it's near the site of an incision, it can just be that that is where they took your stomach out. That incision is usually more painful. If it's SERIOUS pain though (like, pain medication isn't touching it) it's never a bad idea to give your surgeon's office a call and just make sure it's normal.

It's important to remember this is still major surgery you are recovering from even if the incisions are small. They did major work on your insides and they will hurt. Likely for a couple weeks. You need to rest, walk and sip your water. It took me a good 4 weeks to feel normal again. Most people are not like those few who post that they are out driving, gardening and housecleaning in a week. Please honor your recovery and take it slow.

And get off the damn scale! ☺ your body is full of fluids and gas and asll that takes time to dissipate. I suggest staying off the scale at least 2 more weeks and then only weigh once per week. Focus on the other parts of this journey like journaling, food tracking, walking, all the healthy distractions.

Three pounds in one week?!  When you were pumped full of fluids in the hospital?!  That's AWESOME!

The pain is also normal.  Take your pain meds, walk as much as possible, drink your liquids and protein.  Be gentle with yourself since you just had major surgery.

When I first had my surgery, my weight just barely nudged down a little at a time. I didn't see huge drops in weight and thought that it wasn't "working" for me. I kept following the doctor's orders, because let's face it, in the beginning you don't have a lot of choice, and I lost a little more. I got really busy this summer with a health crisis involving a loved one. Somehow, here I am four and a half months post-surgery, and I have lost 75 pounds! The surgery WILL work, it will work best if you follow the doctor's instructions. If you hit a stall, or things seem to just move slowly, don't worry. Everyone experiences these same worries and has the same fears of it not working, but it always does. As for the pain, I agree with the other posters that unless it is severe, or lasts a long time, it is probably normal pain from the surgery. And, everyone recovers from the surgery at different paces as well. I think you are going to be fine!

After one week i wouldn't worry you were pumped full of iv fluids while In the hospital and i purposefully didn't buy a scale because i would be on in morning noon and night and obsess over the numbers.  I would not worry the weight will come off keep doing the right things and it will.  Good luck.
