Anyone on here have bad GERD or reflux before VSG? did it help or change your reflux/GERD? Mind has been acting up terribly and I am wondering if I will finally get some relief.

Only 5 days left before surgery... YIKES!

In theory, you might have had an endoscopy pre-op that would have diagnosed this.  It's not uncommon for people to learn they have hernias pre-op, to have the hernia fixed in conjunction with the sleeve, and to have no problems with reflux afterward.  Since the hernia was the cause for the reflux.

Otherwise, the sleeve can make reflux/GERD worse and it's often recommended that people with those problems have the RNY, not the sleeve.

I've had GERD since 1998, and have been taking omeprazole for it. I also had a large hiatal hernia that my surgeon fixed when he did the sleeve. Six weeks ago, my surgeon told me to cut the omeprazole in half, taking only the evening dose. No problems so far. Hope to be off the stuff in a few more months.

I had GERD before VSG. I was on 20mg of Rabeprazole for it daily, and never had a single symptom. I sometimes wondered if I in fact still had GERD, I was so symptom-free. But when I had the VSG? OMG, I have to be honest, it's been a nightmare. Soon after surgery (back on the Pariet already, mind you) I was waking up at night literally choking on stomach acid. And the nausea the reflux causes has been pretty horrific. I switched PPIs to Nexium (40mg twice daily) and it has been a TINY bit better. But the gurgling from the reflux still frequently wakes me and my husband up at night (as soon as an hour after taking it), and the nausea I still have in the mornings because of it is awful. One of the reasons I opted for the sleeve was because with the sleeve you can take NSAIDS but with the RNY you absolutely cannot. I have to take an NSAID every day for knee pain (genetic condition). I had to go off the NSAID and deal with the knee pain to improve my GERD enough that I can eat without throwing up in the mornings. Even with all this, I still wouldn't have picked the RNY. The DS was what I originally wanted, but it has a sleeve component so I'm not sure it would have been any better reflux-wise. I'm holding out hope that as I lose more weight my reflux will get better, or that when I see my surgeon next he'll have another PPI I should try or something, anything, to make this reflux better. Sorry to be such a downer!

I had GERD pre-op, pretty bad actually.  I was on omeprazole and felt almost symptom free as long as I didn't miss a dose.  Now, however, the reflux is worse, they have placed me on Protonix in the morning and Ranitadine at night.  It seems to be ok as long as I don't miss a dose and if I don't eat any dairy before bed.  Dairy, in general, just doesn't agree with my sleeve.  Also, I have found that tea, even decaf tends to induce reflux symptoms.  With all this being said, the reflux is not bad enough for me to not have had the surgery.

Thanks everyone! I am so worried that my reflux is going to get worse. I have been fairly symptom free for the past few months even went off of my PPI but the last week I have been MISERABLE!! With my surgery in 5 days I am sort of freaking out that it's going to get worse. I am back on my PPI and have been holding out hope but so far no luck. UGH!!

I had reflux pretty bad before surgery. When I woke up from the operation I discovered my surgeon also fixed a hiatal hernia I didn't know I had.  Still take my PPI but haven't had reflux since surgery. I took my PPI the morning of surgery and since day 3 post op.
