Hello, so what the logic for not sipping out of a straw after the surgery.  Has anyone heard about this?

To prevent air intake and not swallowing too much at once

At our education classes they have stressed that it is because you can swallow air, And that can be uncomfortable and/or painful after the surgery. It also prevents you from being able to take in the nutrition you need because your sleeve is blocked with air.  I hope that makes sense!

My surgeon has no straw restrictions and I've seen many people here say they have better luck, and swallow less air, when drinking WITH a straw.  So I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Drink the way that works best for you.

I was also told no straws. I have been terrified to even try one. But have seen some people have no issues at all.

I drank with a straw after surgery and had no issues. That was really the only way I could get fluids down. Do whatever works well for you.

I was restricted from straws per program, however once I was in ICU from complications, they had me taking sips from a straw as to not take in too much.  I have tried both ways and I honestly burp more without the straw.  I would say it's whatever works best for you and makes you comfortable, but I'm no professional.
