Straws and gum

Swallowing gum could be dangerous. If you think you might swallow gum by accident . . . well, I guess I'm not sure how you've made it this far.

The straw thing is because some people think you can get extra air with your fluid. If using a straw is uncomfortable, stop it. If you feel fine, go for it.

I started using straws at about 2 weeks out. It isn't going to damage you, just a matter of whether it is comfortable or if you are going to take in too much air. I had no problem. I did use tic tacs daily to help me with the nausea, I let them melt in my mouth... for me I wasn't worried about accidentally swallowing the gum, just swallowing too much air in the beginning.

Thank you everyone! This has been so helpful! I will have to talk to my doc about the straw thing. I think it would be so much easier to get the fluids in with a straw. The literature that I was given says that the straws draw in too much air and make it uncomfortable. I might ask him if I can try one and see how it goes.

Thank you so much for posing these questions!  I have been wondering about the very same things!

I found out that those stride sour patch kids gum satisfies my sweet and sour cravings. It used to be one my things WAY before surgery. I wasn't much into chocolate, I loved sour candy.
