Straws and gum

The countdown has begun. 11 days until Vday!! I am getting anxious over many things but one of my big worries is about straws. My surgeon says no straws after surgery. I an scared I won't get enough fluid in without a straw, I am addicted to them. How long before you were able to use a straw again? Also how long before I can chew gum again? I feel about gum the same way some people feel about their children :)

Well... perhaps these are two habits you might want to leave behind to embrace your new healthier lifestyle

Lol, yes I have to agrer. I was just curious if anyone was given the OK to use a straw or chew gum and how long before they could. If never is the answer so be it. Just sad

For a few days after surgery you will have to take very small sips of water.  When I took my pills, they would sometimes stick in my throat and partially dissolve.  The only thing that kept me from throwing up was chewing mint gum, to cover up the taste of the pills.  I'm very careful to not swallow the gum of course, but it got me through the worst of problem.

I avoided straws for 3 months, I think?  I never chew gum.  I never really chewed gum before surgery though. Sorry not much help.

My rules were 3 months on straws, I believe. I followed them and started using straws again after 3 months - I always drink with a straw these days (I'm not sure I would ever hit my fluids target without one!). I don't remember gum being a thing - I'm sure I've chewed an occasional piece of gum post-op but I don't remember when I first had one.

I've been chewing gum since about 2 months post-op. Surgeon said it was fine as long as I didn't swallow it. I found chewing gum helped with my digestion at times and is something I do to change the taste in my mouth after I eat certain things. I find doing it after a meal keeps me from thinking about drinking anything immediately after too!

I was offered ice water with a straw as soon as I was cleared for liquids in the hospital. During those first few days I actually found it easier to sip through a straw versus sipping directly out of the cup. I'm not a gum person, so I'm no help there, I can't remember if I was given a rule on it or not since it's not something I would ever chew.

I am a week post surgery, and I chew gum frequently with no problems.  My doc didn't say anything about gum post surgery, but he did tell me to avoid straws because you suck in too much air or something.  I need to ask him if the straw thing is a forever thing or just for now.
