How much time to take off from work?

Hello VSG-ers. I have two appointments left with the NUT, per insurance requirement, so I am starting to plan ahead for my surgery, and was wondering how long you were off after surgery? I'd love to give my co-workers a ball park, and so I can get my ducks in a row so I don't come back to chaos.

I think you will find a variety of answers and it all just depends. I have a desk job and work from home. My surgery was on a Monday and I went back to work the following Monday (basically was off 1 week) and that was plenty. I was bored at home while I was off. I think if you have a more physically demanding job, you would want more time though.

I took 6 weeks off, but should have taken 8 as it took that long for me to get my energy back.  Up until that point, everything was exhausting and I was napping once, and sometimes twice, a day.

Depends on what your job is. Think construction worker (heavy lifting and such) compared to secretary (desk job). I am an elementary teacher, on my feet all day. I had my 5th graders do the lifting when needed. I went back exactly 14 days after surgery without issue. Good luck and I am excieted for you!

I have a desk job and I was gone for 2 weeks. I probably should have taken a 3rd, though, since I had a rough recovery (no opiate pain meds). I was really wiped for weeks afterwards and took lots of naps, but at 2 weeks I was able to be up and around and sitting for most of the workday at least.

I took 4 weeks off.   I wanted t be eating when I go back. I'm in management so lots of staff and lots of meetings

I have a desk job.  Surgery on Wednesday, back to work on Monday.  Worked half days Monday thru Wednesday and back to normal on Thursday.

I'm pre-op, so no personal experience but I can share what I plan on doing. My doctor recomends 4 weeks off for everyone. even if you sit most of the day. He said typically we will not be in pain for that long and will want to return to work sooner. he said to resist returning to work too early. For the first four weeks, your full-time job is getting adjusted to this new life. He has had several patients go back to work too soon, and not keep up with their water, and end up in the hospital.

Even with his warning, I told my boss the recomendation was for 4-weeks, but I hoped to be back much sooner. She quickly stoped me and summoned her "I am your boss and you will listen to me" voice. "you WILL obey your DOCTOR! If he says you need 4 weeks, you will not step foot in the building a day early"  I just looked at her and said in my best Kentucky voice, "Yes Ma'am"! What can I say, we are a dramatic bunch and we love it.

Thank you all for your help. I think I'm going to plan on 4 weeks, but leave it open to increase or decrease that time, depending on how I'm feeling. 

Hi. I took a week off, but my father-in-law passed away, so that week was pretty crazy. I think a week, even without a lot of rest, was adequate; a quiet week would have been plenty for sure!  Good luck!
