2 weeks out...no issues.. but questions

I can't explain per se why what you described, but can confirm it is a common experience. You are newly sleeved, so that stuck feeling will be with you for a while... it does eventually go away so no worries. I also experienced the eat nothing some days and more on other days and simply attributed it to hormones. I tracked all my food for months and saw a very clear pattern that went with the monthly cycle. As far as nutrition, I was provided guidelines or targets to hit. In my case at least 80 grams of protein and a minimum of 64 ounces of water. I was not given limits on how many carbs to take in, but many on the board here shoot for 40 or less. I am hypoglycemic so the whole 40 target doesn't work for me, and I stay around 100-150. Quality carbs, no processed or refined crap and stick to items low on the glycemic index. Don't rush your phases and it is really normal to tolerate some foods better than others at the point you are. Eggs believe it or not can be kind of tough early out. Even a couple years out I don't do well with scrambled eggs that are not soft cooked. Hard boiled or poached works great though. Careful with your dense protein when you are in that phase, take that slow and chew well. Weigh everything as  your stomach has the nerve cut so you will not get your normal full feeling. If you are getting a runny nose that is a common warning that you are at capacity for many of us. Take good care of yourself, and check out eggface's blog for recipes. If you have specific nutrition questions post them and we can be more helpful. If you are not logging your food on something like myfitnesspal.com I strongly encourage it- makes a huge difference to weigh and log everything during the weight loss phase. Cheers! HT

Thank you!  This has been most helpful.  I am really glad to know the discomfort is due to being newly sleeved and not something that will stick around for a lifetime.

I have not been logging my food because there is so little to log!  But I realize now I need to figure out meal times... everything is so discombobulated since surgery so I am not on any schedule... but I need one.  So I need to work on that.  Previous to surgery I was more of a grazer. I know that habit is not good, so... gotta get a schedule and plan my meals... not something I have ever been good at.

Hard boiled eggs have not been an issue... I put a little yogurt in them.. like I would mayo to make it more like egg salad and it has been pretty easy and tasty.

I am looking for new recipes for family favorites that I can tolerate once I am able to eat regular foods.  Right now it's mostly protein shakes, an egg, or about an ounce of soup at a time, plus liquids and that is about all I can tolerate right now.  At first I was super anxious to eat and felt like I was supposed to, but now I have got past that instinct and am just chillin in the process taking one day at a time, focused on liquids and trying to keep things simple.

I appreciate your post.

Ok friend, I am not able to convey "tone" easily on posts so please read this knowing my intent is to be very gentle, kind, and helpful. You need to weigh and log. I know, I get it. I never did this preop and it seemed like a giant pain in the butt. It really is just a habit you need to form. Myfitnesspal is free and has an app, and truly it only takes a minute 2-3 times a day to get everything logged. If you don't log you are at high risk of:

1. Eating far more than you realize. Hear me when I say this, as I can attest to it first hand. My portion size "eyeballing" was so incredibly far off. Weight it. Log it. Otherwise you will likely find a few months out that you are slowing loss to a crawl or in maintenance, despite eating healthier choices. Portion creep is very real.

2. You really need to monitor your targets. If you don't log, you don't really know. Protein is critical. In my case I hate meat, so if I didn't log I would be terribly short every single day. I am also always short on iron and need to keep a close eye on carbs. If you don't log, you don't know. If you don't know you risk your labs coming back a hot mess and not getting enough protein... your body will use your current muscle as a protein source to make up for it- not good.

3. Weighing. At first I weighed everything carefully. After a couple of months I did get pretty good at eyeballing it. But now, I find that I have to go back to weighing every so often as my portion size creeps up.

I know you are not eating much right now, but that makes it even more critical because you need to get a handle on if you are hitting nutrition targets. If you use MFP look me up over there- I am idateacher2 on that site.

I get you are trying to keep things simple, and you are a girl after my own heart in that regard. I don't like complicated anything. If you log, you will be much more likely to hit goal. If you don't, you are much more likely to not hit goal. Simple. :)

Excellent advice!  Thank you.

I deleted MFP after surgery thinking it would not help me.  But I will reinstall and start using again... who knew....LOL.

Hi Micrene,

I don't know if your situation is the same as mine, but my tummy was swollen after surgery and I could only eat an ounce to an ounce and a half at a time for weeks.  I talked to my NP and she said it was swelling, and it usually resolved in week 7, and it did.  I know most people can eat more than this early out, but for me, it didn't resolve until the 7th week.    If your tummy is really swollen, it might account for that stuck feeling, as well, though I didn't have that.

Good luck with your recovery.  I can tell you, it is so worth it when the pounds start dropping away.

Hang in there!

Carol

Your only 3 weeks out, and yes it gets better.  Foods that don't sit well now may be better in the future.  You are no way healed so take it slooooowwww!  It took me awhile to eat 2-3 ounces at a time, and I'm 6 months out.  The purpose of the sleeve is so you cant overeat, and it seems to be doing its job.  Enjoy the journey and take each day and food as it comes.
