Spicy food
Hello!
Once again I turn to this wonderful group for advice and of course will consult my surgeon. Two weeks out today and finally feel like me again other than some swelling (either that or I am fatter now lol.) When did you lose all the swelling?
Couldn't have survived without you guys advice.
So naturally cravings have surfaced well one in particular.......I am craving hot sauce, common sense tells me not a good idea for a healing stomach.
When were you able to have spicy or hot sauce, what phase, months or years out (hoping not years lol.)
Thanks again!

I am 2 weeks, three days out and had some hot sauce on some refried black beans twice this week (I'm on pureed foods) and it was no problem at all. I think there will be a bit of trial and error involved as we adjust. Also, my swelling went down after about the first week then I started dropping big...down 17 so far (July 6 surgery date). That said, I think everyone's body heals differently so if you're calling your surgeon anyway, you may ask about the swelling. Are you getting all your fluids because the one day I only got 40 oz, I had big water retention issues. Anyway, best of luck throgh the journey!!!
Mmmm, I get to have some on Monday....just counting the days LOL! I saw something about spicy food interfering with the healing process somewhere so I wanted to check.
Great job on the weight loss, I haven't weighed since my follow up last week but that was only 5.....since I was a revision I don't have too much to loose and I am normally a slow loser anyway but way to go!!!!
Thanks for the response, going to dream of refried beans now LOL!

I agree with LadyLeo. Been 3 weeks and I have no trouble at all with salsa, hot sauce or pepper sauce. A little on the refried beans makes a mighty tasty bite of food. Maybe not too appetizing to look at but that ain't the point right now :-).

The swelling in my tummy didn't go down until week 7 post op. I remember because I could only eat an ounce to 1.5 ounces per meal at first, and my NUT thought it was swelling and predicted that it would be better around week 7, and it was.
I don't know about hot sauce early on. I think once you are about 6months out, the tummy is pretty well healed, and there were no limits. But I don't recall what they said about spicy things early than that.
Don't worry. You will get to a point where you can eat anything in moderation.
best wishes,
Carol

Thanks for the response, I do have some gurgling when getting my water in but it is going down! Most of my swelling is around the two biggest incisions, I look like I have a spare tire lol..... I will ask them about it as well, not worried nothing red or too sore!
Oh, I can't wait to get off of full liquids then again couldn't wait to get off of clears before either lol!
Thanks again Carol for your continued support!

Hi Michele, Thanks for your kind words. It sounds like the swelling you are talking about is different from mine. I didn't have any swelling around the incisions, or anything visible. My "swelling" was only evident in a very low capacity in my stomach.
I hope your swelling goes down sooner than mine did! It sounds like its quite different.
best of luck in your recovery.

I think I tried hot sauce at about a month out. When I was first allowed chicken, I put some hot-wing sauce in canned mashed chicken breast. Just a teeny bit at first to make sure I didn't rip a hole in my stomach, LOL!

That's what I was thinking!!! I figured it could be a irritant and possibly affect healing.....the only thing I miss is baked chicken wings with blue cheese, nothing else just that so I figured I might mix a little hot sauce and blue cheese on some mashed chicken.......great minds think alike!!!!
Thanks for the response!!!!
