Is it ok to drink regular tea with a VSG?

I drink regular coffee and tea but waited until I was at least 6 weeks out before doing so.

Check with your doctor to see if you get the OK for caffeine, though it probably shouldn't be a problem.

Tea has far less caffeine than coffee (25mg/cup for tea, 100mg/cup for coffee), and there are plenty of folks who drink coffee after surgery.

I was told caffeine is hard on the stomach, which is the reason I was told to avoid it after surgery. I still haven't been brave enough to try coffee, which aggravated my stomach before surgery anyway, but I started drinking regular iced tea (sweetened with splenda, no lemon) last week (about 6 weeks post op) and I love it. It's a great way to for me to get the liquids I need and enjoy doing it. I would definitely wait at least 5-6 weeks after surgery to try it (listen to your stomach!) and try it slow at first to make sure your stomach will like it. I've found several things that I like that is on my approved eating list that my stomach can't stand. :-)

I drank tea right away - not as much as normal and lost my taste for coffee for a few months after surgery.  Now I probably have 2-3 cups of tea a day - I LOVE IT, LOL

I went 6 months on de-caf iced tea, then switched over to regular.  My surgeon recommended no caffeine for 6 months.

Tea is fine, but don't drink it within two hours of taking your iron. Studies show tea blocks 87% of iron absorption. Coffee blocks iron as well, but not as much as tea.

I look forward to a glass a tea after I have all of my water for the day.  Its my reward in the evenings.
