I got my 3 month lab results and my cholesterol has gone up. Went from 205 to 227. I have lost 54 lbs total I don't really get it.

Mine went up at 3 months, too.   I asked my bariatric nurse if that was common and she said no.  The only thing I could think of was that post surgery a higher proportion of my diet was meat plus there was drastic decrease in soluble fiber in my diet.  But, at 6 months it was down to its usual level even tho my diet wasn't much different than at 3 months.  So, I don't get it, either :)

Some people's cholesterol changes greatly with weight loss, but many people's don't.  Mine typically is the same whether I am at a healthy BMI or at a super high BMI.

Anyway, I bet yours goes back down, too.

Thank you, I have an appointment on Monday. I was put on medication for it pre op to depress the risk of a clot. At the time I wasn't really all that high but I do have a strong family history. I bet my dr will put me back on it. I really dislike taking meds. Hears hoping 6 months is better.

I don't usually have high cholesterol, but my cholesterol went up for the first year to 18 months during weight loss. I think it was because we are burning fat, and our own fat has cholesterol, just as dietary fat does.  My doctor wanted to treat it, and I suggested waiting until the weight loss slowed to see if it came down by itself and it did.

Just my theory... Don't know if its a general phenomenon

Some people may experience a rise in cholesterol as they lose weight, because as weight is lost, fat stores shrink. The fat and cholesterol normally stored in fatty tissue have nowhere to go but the bloodstream, causing a rise in cholesterol. This effect is not permanent and cholesterol levels will drop as your weight stabilizes. Medications used to to treat high cholesterol are not effective in controlling cholesterol when it comes from fatty tissue stores.

You are in the rapid weight loss phase after WLS and your liver is working overtime to flush the fat.  Don't be surprised to see your liver enzymes become elevated too.

Thank you for asking this because my 3 month labs showed the same thing with cholesterol.  I went from 202 to 222.  I was expecting a decrease, but the answers you received make me feel better too.

Thank you everyone, it makes sense now. I was started on medication pre op for precaution. I stopped after surgery. If it is suggested to start again I will see if I can wait a little longer.
