Any 50+ BMI people that have had the sleeve??
I totally understand what you are saying! I would be happy just to be at a better place, I don't need "skinny" or model perfect...I just want mobility and a life. Right now I am limited but I was always super active...some of that back would be amazing! :)
I had surgery on February 24. At the time I weighed 347 pounds and had a BMI of 54.4. So far I have lost 94 pounds and I am down to a BMI of 39.7. This in less than 5 months. So yes it is very realistic to expect to lose with the VSG. But you will only get out of it what you are willing to put in. I make sure that I stay on plan 95% of the time. I haven't been perfect, but I am trying my best to maximize weight loss now when it is easier.
Good luck!

Thank you!! :) I am very willing to stick to the plan and I certainly don't want to waste the opportunity and stretch the stomach back out once the surgery is completed. Thankfully I have already made a lot of changes that will carry over. I'm just looking to be back in the land of mobility. Its hard not being able to do all that you like to.
You must feel amazing!!! My doctor didn't want to do my surgery at my weight either. They wanted me to lose 100 pounds and I just felt defeated because the most I have ever lost on my own was 70 pounds. So they had a meeting and cut it down to 50 pounds. I lost 11 this month alone so I am 39 pounds away from surgery which is exciting and terrifying at the same time.
I just want everything to go smoothly so I am here for my kids!! :) Miss my "normal" life, ya know?
61.9 at the start of my 6 month pre-op. My mind blocks that number from my memory so I have to look it up every time. I lost about 55 lbs before surgery. I feel like I have "worked the plan" to optimize the surgery as best as I know how. Full disclosure, I still feel like I don't know much but have tried to model behaviors from successful folks here on the board, plus, of course, utilize the resources of my own medical team.
I also block out how much I have lost although my ticker below should be up to date. I am just over 7 months out from surgery.
My surgeon says that my weight loss rate approaches what her RNY patients get. She said that in her experience, RNY patients lose faster in the beginning but VSG pt's lose weight for longer so the weight loss eventually ends up being similar for similar starting BMI's.
And while I totally understand wanting to get an idea of what can be expected, don't despair if your journey doesn't seem all that spectacular day to day. Overtime, you will do great!

Awww thanks!!! You made me teary, your post was like a huge hug of encouragement!! :) My emotions did a whirlwind when the Doctor said he would do my surgery if I lost 50 pounds...39 left to go. I was so excited, but then fear raised its ugly head and I started to panic.
So, asking questions makes me feel a bit better. :) Thank you for taking the time out to encourage a complete stranger. :) I appreciate it. :)
My BMI was 94 and now it's at 34.6. I lost a lot of weight, but some of that weight did come back on and now I have that under control and that extra weight that came on is coming back off. I'm glad that I had the sleeve down a little over 5 years ago. I'm very happy with my life since I had the sleeve done.

Wow, you have done great!!! Congrats on your weight loss...its very encouraging to see someone in my range get to where you have gotten. My highest weight was 528, currently 513. They said they will do the surgery if I hit like 470 so it will be very close to the weight you were at. Good to know!! Thank you for sharing your story with me. :)
Indeed!!! Thank you...it is encouraging. My highest weight was 565 and now I'm at 208.12 and would like to get back under 200 again. I know you can get to 470, I believe in you. Indeed good to know!! You're welcome. :-)
