I have a BMI way over the 50+ mark and I was just wondering if there were any others in the group that have a BMI in my range that have opted for the sleeve.  I have heard that the weight loss is comparable to the bypass but I was wondering what your own experiences have been.  I don't want the white washed version, I want to hear what can be expected from someone willing to work the plan and optimize the surgery.

Love to hear from you!! 39 pounds away from surgery!! :)

My BMI was over 50. I'm 16 months post-op and I'm down 140 pounds. I'm sort of stuck/maintaining at 180 right now due to LIFE, but I working to get back on track and lose another 30-60 pounds.

My BMI was 60.  I weighed 385 pounds.  I am now 2 years post op and I have a bmi of 24 and I weigh 160 pounds.

I love my sleeve.  Sometimes people will tell you to go with RNY when you have a lot of weight to lose, but my experience is that the sleeve does the job.

You have to commit to following the plan. You can defeat yourself in many ways.  But if you follow the plan, you can make it work.  I like to say "Weight loss surgery doesn't make it easy, but it makes it possible."

best wishes,

Carol

I get it. I have lost great amounts of weight on my own in the past to hit a wall and gain again. I'm simply hoping with this extra assistance that I can break the barrier so I can exercise more and simply do more period.

Congrats on your weight loss.

I had the same experience.  I could diet for long periods of time and lose a lot of weight, but it came back with a vengeance when I'd stop dieting.  It was amazing how fast I would gain it back!

The good news is that post-surgery will be different - at least it is for me.  Now I can maintain, being conscientious but not extremely strict, and if I see a small increase, I reduce my intake for a week or two and get back to where I want to be.  It feels normal.

I think you will be happy with weight loss surgery, as I am.

best of luck,

Carol

Thank you!! I feel like all I need is a little help. :)  The last time I lost a big chunk it was 70 pounds and I had been on a program for a year that really fit well for me.  My dad regularly gave blood and his test came up irregular so they wouldn't take his blood and we all feared he had cancer.  Immediately my emotions were off the charts as all I wanted was for him to be proud of me before I died and I started gaining.

This is the  hard part for me when I lose and their is any pressure to continue or to lose more I panic.  Like now I am down 15 pounds, I have 39 to lose until surgery and the last few days eating was not the best and I know its that fear of failure.  So today I started right back on plan and I am going to guzzle water like a camel going on a LONG journey!! LOL

I am just really hoping with my focus and dedication that the surgery will be just that added boost to get me through.

The other question is of surgery afterwards for skin removal.  Have you had to deal with any of that?? (if that question is too personal...no worries!!)

I had a fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty about three months ago, and I am so glad I did.  The doctor removed 6.5 pounds of skin.  I posted a before and after picture of my tummy on my profile, if you are interested.   I had a huge amount of extra skin on my belly, and now it looks like it did when I was a teen.  I am so happy that I did it.   the rest of my skin is tightening up pretty well over time.  It won't be perfect, but I'm ok with it.

best of luck

Carol
