Question about Pre-OP diet and Splenda

Since the pre-op diet is mainly low carb, would splenda-flavored sweet tea be a bad thing? I know there are hidden carbs in it and I make it by the gallon-full so it can get cold in the fridge.

Thanks!

Pre op diet I was allowed to drink liquids that were sugar free. I drank turkey hill ice tea (still drink it) that was sweetened with splenda. I would check with your NUT, but mine was okay with that along with me drinking water.

I'll quote the instructions that was given to me, but I'll try to call my nut tomorrow (it's after hours).

"Water or No-cal, Sugar Free, Decaffeinated drinks throughout the day."

"Protein Drink for breakfast and lunch. For dinner you make have a sensible dinner, such as on portion of lean mean, salad with low-cal dressing and a vegetable. A healthy Choice Weigh****chers or Lean Cuisine meal may be used for dinner, how ever, the meal should not contain pasta, red meat or potatoes."

"One day before surgery have only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Clear liquids include; tea, coffee without cream, apple juice, water, broth without noodles, plain jell-o, fruit juice bars (avoid red or purple items). Nothing by the mouth after midnight."

I would assume your tea with splenda is okay.....just make sure your tea is decaffeinated.

I see you're from MI. Where and what surgeon?

Belleville and Dr. David Edelman. Thanks for answering!

It's the Meijer-brand brand black tea quart bags. I'll just cut the tea out right now if it will be THAT bad. (Funny enough, I take firocet for migranes in which that has caffeine, and my day before I'm allowed coffee.. go figure!)

I drink a lot of sugar-free lemonade made with Splenda. If in doubt, call your surgeon, but I imagine it should be just fine.

I do have a few containers of crystal light and store brand crystal light-like powder. I'll just start making them instead of my black sweet(splenda) tea.

If you're allowed to have apple juice the day before surgery and since there was no mention of sticking to non sweetened liquids, go for it. For the next few weeks it's not going to slow your weight loss one bit.

Eventually, you may want to consider going to more unsweetened beverages. It's really not that hard of a transition post op.
