Post op surgery pain question! :) (how long out of work?)

I have my first appointment for a sleeve on July 9. I'm wondering how much pain you were in, and how long you had to take off work? I'm hoping to only have to take one week off but I'm just curious! I'm a veterinarian and I can make it so that I see ONLY small dogs and cats that I can have put up on the table for me (instead of seeing the bigger dogs on the floor). I really can't take TWO weeks off. How was it for you?

I am 1week postop (6/17) and *almost* able to go back to work.  I am still tired from the pain meds.  If I had ONLY had VSG - I might be fine at this point, but I am still having right-sided pain from my cholecystectomy (gall bladder removed at same time as sleeve) so I am still taking 1/2 dose of pain meds (and still sleepy).  Will probably stop them by the end of them week.  I plan on starting work remotely tomorrow and trying to go into the office by Friday.

Best of luck to you!! :)

I had no pain or other problems.  Some people on here have had similar experiences but many have not.  There's no way to predict how your body will react.  I'm retired but think I could have returned to work after a week or 10 days due to being tired.  If you're going to limit your cases, I'd say a week is a possibility.

I'm two weeks out tomorrow, and I started working half days this week (I have an office job I can do from home). I have been pain free since about day 8, but I get fatigued really quickly, especially when I'm physically active. I would have trouble being on my feet for hours and hours.

Would reduced hours be an option for you? It might make the transition back a little easier.

I had very little pain. I was off pain meds by day 4 or 5. I went back to work after 3 weeks. I work in a very busy orthopedics practice.

Best of luck on your journey.

I had little pain or nausea (thanks to the strong anti-nausea drugs I requested!)  I felt like I had the flu for the first three days - headaches and groggy.  But I was back to work part time by the 5th day.  I was tired for months, though.  But I was also 64 when I had surgery, so that may account for it.

There's a good chance you can be up and running in a week.  If not, you'll find a way to make it work.

Best of luck,

Carol

I had no pain at one week.  My only problem was being very weak and tired for the first month.  I took 2 weeks off and puked the first day back to work (didn't know that I was all of a sudden lactose intolerant).  But I could have gone back after a week.

I was back to work in 8 days after surgery. Desk job.

too strenuous of exercise of lifting was by far my biggest problem for 8 weeks. Incisions would hurt if I pushed myself too far. Not good! Be careful of that.

Water and eating are a challenge at first too. Gets easier daily however.

I had a fair amount of pain (not critical, but definitely nagging and exhausting).  I was also extremely fatigued for several weeks.  I took six weeks off work and could have used another two, as I didn't get my energy bac****il around seven weeks out from surgery.

I also have a mostly desk job, but I found sitting for long periods more painful than almost anything for almost the entire six weeks.

I had my sleeve when I was 51 years old.  Went in on Friday, home on Sunday, driving by Tuesday.  Went back to work (desk job) the following Monday.  I was back to full-time at 10 days post-op but I definitely was more tired and moving a bit slower.

If you go back after one week, keep to a much, much lighter schedule with a longer lunch and breaks for yourself.  It'll be a good 2-3 weeks before you feel back to normal...and that's under ideal cir****tances with zero complications or issues.
