I know they say you should avoid Alcohol for about a year after surgery but I have a huge annual Canoe Trip coming up this weekend and there is always a lot of beer and what not. Wondering if anyone drank 3 months post op and what they drank how they felt.... I'm really nervous.. I used to be a beer drinker but cant now because of the carbonation... I have no idea what I would drink if I do decide to Drink.. I have never been a heavy drinker anyway but camping out all weekend and 8 hours on the water without having any beer at all doesn't sound like a good time LOL. I have had the odd small glass of wine the last month or so and that didn't bother me.. maybe that's what I should do... just a glass of wine here and there?! I'm not into the fruity drinks so I have a hard time finding drinks that arnt too sweet. Ideas? Suggestions?

I'd be more concerned about the empty calories than the carbonation.

My suggestion is to drink water and work on figuring out how to have a good time without alcohol.  It's easier than you think!

That is a really loaded question around here. :)  Personally, I drin****asionally, although never anything carbonated.  I don't drink wine either.  Honestly, I figure the point of drinking is to feel the alcohol, so when I do drink, I drink straight, low cal stuff, like a shot of tequila.  One shot of tequila will give me the same buzz as if my friends have two or three margaritas.  However, I REALLY feel it, so if I was canoeing on a river, I wouldn't drink.  I would be worried about getting drunk and falling out.

Oh, and I should mention that I had my first drink of alcohol at 5 months and I only drink about once a month.

I'm almost six years post-sleeve and I can drink maybe one glass of wine before I get drunk. I was not nearly such a lightweight prior to the sleeve. I don't remember how soon I had alcohol post-surgery, but I do remember it was after a few months and that I got very drunk very fast...being that you're only 3 months out post-op and therefore your restriction is still quite severe, I doubt you'll be able to eat enough calories to absorb the alcohol, which will make it hard to sober up if you do find it hits you hard.

Personally I don't think it's worth risking it, but if you do have a little to drink I would suggest something with as low an alcohol content as you can find and to go very slow. It will hit you out of nowhere - post-op alcohol tolerance and its effects are very different than what you're used to. There's also a higher risk of alcohol abuse because it really does feel different after the sleeve for some people, and someone who never had issues with alcohol abuse pre-VSG can find that to be a different story post-VSG, so just be careful! :/

Water sports + alcohol + fairly new sleever = disaster waiting to happen

No one else gives a crap what you drink on this canoe trip...seriously.  It's not going to impact their enjoyment of the trip one way or the other if you drink water the whole time.  You know it's not a good idea to drink now, you've been told not to do it for a whole year - but you admit you've already been drinking wine.  So who has the problem here?

If this sounds harsh, I meant it to.  You have "no idea" what to drink??  Water will quench your thirst much better than any booze.  You were told not to drink -- don't do it.  And if it makes you resentful and angry not to, then you got bigger problems, my friend.

I was recently chided for being harsh because I wrote a post incredulous that people worry about carbonation but not about alcohol.  Please someone tell me in what universe carbonation is the bad guy - preferably with photograpic evidence of someone's sleeve or pouch exploding!!!!!

please assure me that other people understand exactly how stupid this thought process is.

Alcohol + canoeing is just ridiculous.

Diet cranberry juice has 5 calories per serving.  It even looks like wine if you are concerned about what others think.  Personally, I could give a **** about what other's think.  My body, my health, my decision.  I wouldn't want the empty calories, and transfer addiction is very real in the WLS community.  You are taking big risks this early out from surgery.  You need to ask yourself why this is so important to you.  You CAN have a good time without ALCOHOL.

In addition to what others have mentioned already, I'd be concerned about getting dehydrated out in the sun drinking nothing but beer. Stick to water or sugar-free gatorade or such.

LOL you say??  Well really, this is serious business.  You can't have fun on a canoe trip without drinking alcohol?  That's kind of sad.  If you're not a heavy drinker, it shouldn't be "a big deal" to go without.

You should do more reading on the subject.  Or call your surgeon's office and see what they have to say about it.  You know the answer..... Your whole post is excusing away the fact that you want to drink on the trip.... If that's what you want to do, just do it.  Don't expect knowledgeable people here to say it's ok.

Hope you're ok with the responses.......you asked.
