Was it worth it?

I am pre-op and may need a VSG (instead of roux-en-Y) due to another medical condition I have. I see the surgeon in August to discuss. But, I can't help but feel a little disappointed. I suffer from anxiety disorder, so I worry needlessly about the smallest thing. I think I am convincing myself that VSG won't help me, but I am pretty sure that is anxiety talking.

any veterans that can offer thoughts are appreciated.

Oh Tatirod,

I think you will be so happy with the VSG.  It is a simpler procedure, it leaves the pyloric valve functioning, which helps with feeling full longer. And you are less likely to have dumping.

I lost 225 pounds with my sleeve.  I now weight 160 pounds and I have a normal BMI.  The weight loss surgery really works, and I think the choice to do the VSG rather than the RNY may be a blessings in disguise.

best of luck in your weight loss journey.

Carol

Thank you, this is most encouraging. :) I hadn't really considered the "pros" of VSG. According to my shrink (pre-considering WLS), I am prone to "catastrophic thinking".

I'm only four months out but very happy with my choice with the VSG. It's a less invasive surgery and you have a fully functioning stomach and able to absorb more food and nutrients. A big factor that I didn't like about RNY was the malabsorption piece. I too have bad anxiety. I think you'll be happy with it! It's a good middle ground between the lap band and RNY. Good luck! And let me know if you have any questions.

all the surgeries will work for you, just need to follow the guidelines for each.  my advice is to really take advantage of those first 3 months (where you really cannot eat much at all) to break free from all your unhealthy eating.  cut out all processed foods.  stick to whole foods that you cook yourself.  no pre-made anything, no junk, no fast food, etc.  this is not a time for moderation IMO - that's for maintenance 2 years later.  pick up some other hobbies during this time, whether it's exercise, crafts, reading, etc etc etc  doesnt matter, jsut some other way to deal with stress and anxiety that doesnt involve food.

It is your anxiety talking. I got the lap-band 11 years ago, and it was a colossal failure. That made me very cautious about the sleeve. I researched it thoroughly, got all the advice I could (especially from this forum), and finally made the decision to go ahead with it. Four months post-op, I can say categorically that even if I never lose another pound (which won't happen!), the improvements in my health and well-being have already made the sleeve a good decision.

Good luck with your decision. BTW, I take meds for anxiety. If you don't already take them, it would be a good idea to ask your doctor about them.

Thanks, this was helpful. :)
I have been taking Zoloft, Abilify, and valproate for >1 year now for anxiety/depression. In general my mood disorders are much better than they used to be (pre-meds), but I still worry. But, now I know the worrying probably is just me being silly. It still helps to get confirmation sometimes.

Thanks to all of the posts, I'm feeling much less worrisome about VSG.

Absolutely worth it. I would never get RNY unless it was only option. I work in hospital. Ive never seen anyone come in with complications from the sleeve in the long term
