Today is my 40th birthday, and my husband is taking me out to dinner. I can handle the dinner, but I know he will want to have dessert.  Any suggestions?

Happy birthday!

Start getting used to other people eating things in front of you that you can't eat or simply choose not to eat.  Practice fully enjoying the other person's enjoyment of what they're eating without feeling resentful or "deprived".  Feeling resentful and deprived is a slippery slope to seriously messing up.

If it will bother you to have him eat it in front of you then remind him that it's your birthday and you would prefer to skip the dessert. Or, perhaps he can order a dessert to take home to enjoy later.

Or, if it doesn't bother you to see him eat it in front of you then you can always just have a bite to enjoy as well. Sometimes I have a bite of a dessert but most often I am quite satisfied with whatever else I have eaten and don't want the dessert. Of course, sweets were not my weakness, in fact, I have a much harder time skipping the appetizers that my family loves to order.

Happy birthday!! :)

For special occasions, I will have a bite or two of a fancy dessert. After all, it's much better than being able to eat an ENTIRE dessert after a HUGE dinner like I could pre-op! As long as you've been good otherwise, and you're not eating dessert to the exclusion of protein and other healthy stuff, it shouldn't be a problem.

For special occasions, I will have a few bites of something decadent (usually crème brulee or our local store's ice cream cake).  I give the leftovers to my mother, son or grandsons.  It has to be something really good or it's not worth it.  If it is not up to snuff, I tell myself that I could have junk like that anytime I want so why would I want it for a special occasion.  I have rules and the most important is that I don't allow myself the leftovers.  We have to live.

More than dessert, I miss drinking coffee after dinner, so I try to stop eating early to be sure a half an hour goes by so I can drink decaf coffee while everyone has dessert.

Happy Birthday!  (Focus on the important things -- the gifts!)

Dinner  was a success.  I had salad he had fajitas that had avacado on them ( no temptation due to avacado allergy) and no dessert.  I was full and so was he.

Happy Birthday!  I find it easier to pass on the dessert.  It is a weakness of mine so if I never start I'm safe.
