H Pylori Testing

I saw someone else on here talking about having this test done and their surgery being delayed.  My surgeon didn't require this test in any of my Pre-Op labs.  I checked with his office today to see if they would be testing me and the nurse said no.  Just looking for other's experiences.  Did you get tested?

Did you gave an endoscopy? They typically will take a small stomach biopsy to test. I was tested. If you are positive (and it is pretty common) then complication risks increase if left untreated. 

No endoscopy.  I have a pre-op appointment next Monday with the surgeon for a physical and then they are sending me to the hospital for routine blood work to confirm that I am not pregnant and to advise them of any infections in the blood, but she said my insurance didn't require the H Pylori Test?

Ttis test is typically done after the surgery is done.  They take a small biopsy during your surgery and you get the results after th surgery. I was told that I had it and my family physician put me on a heavy dose of antibiotics and Prevacid for a week I think. I then had a blood test that showed that I might still have the bacteria. I now need to have a urea breath test to ensure the bacteria is gone because sometimes the blood test shows a false positive. 

I can't imagine how it would delay your surgery if you had it.

Thanks!  I just see that some people on here have had it prior to surgery and had to undergo antibiotics before they could have surgery, thus delaying their surgery.  I appreciate your response.  I'm such a newbie!!!

No worries. I had tons of questions before I had surgery. Keep reading the posts and asking questions. You want to be informed when you go in for your surgery. Definitely learn from the mistakes that others have made and have graciously posted. I know I have!

I did not have a test for H Pylori before surgery, and when they did the biopsy of the tissue removed during surgery, they found inflammation consistent with H Pylori.  I waited 6 to 8 weeks for my tummy to heal, and then did the antibiotics to treat the H Pylori.

It was discovered in 2008 that I had HPylori.  I took meds that I had an allergic reaction to.  I was tested by blood and it said that I no longer had HPylori. 

In January, 2015, my first consult for WLS, I was told I had to have a breathe test done to confirm I no longer had HPylori.  I failed that test.  I had to pass the test before the doctor would do the surgery.  The new medicine I was given was 12 pills a day, which consisted of 3 different antibiotics.  Again I was allergic to the meds, but I was told I either continue to take the medicine and deal with the reactions or not have surgery.  I suffered through 5 days of meds and refused to take anymore.  I no longer have H-Pylori and had surgery April 8th.  It was worth it.
