I live with a smoker and hate smoking in general for a number of reasons. I am about to embark on this journey within the next month and were any of you more sensitive to smells or odors after surgery?

OMG if you're anything like me, you're in for it...sorry, just being honest.  Cigarette smoke was the worst and especially that stale stench that remains on clothing/hair.  I was in Aruba with my family 5 weeks post op and my sister was there (huge smoker).  I could smell her from feet away and it made me sick :(  I couldn't even share a bed with her which was our plan for the condo but ended up having my own room.  Does your roommate at least smoke outside??

YES!  Much, much more sensitive to smells - real and imagined - after surgery.  I was constantly smelling cigarette smoke in my own home and no one has ever smoked in my house and my husband isn't a smoker.

I was also a LOT a more sensitive to all kinds of perfumes, colognes, scented candles and air fresheners.  No idea why...and I'm still pretty sensitive to all that stuff at 2 years out.

Well, without sounding pathetic, I omitted part of the story. Four years ago while I was on vacation the company I worked for was bought out and when I returned from vacation, they had let everyone go… fast forward to now.

I was living in Massachusetts and I ended up moving back home in which one parent is a smoker.

I almost have a masters in education and am working part time but still cannot get a place of my own due to costs and the nature of substitute teaching. My mom is the one who smokes and for the most part it is outside, but then she comes in… and right now it is gross. So I am sure that this will be compounded after my surgery.

She needs to quit, but won’t and I don’t know what is stopping her. She is as stubborn like an ox and I am my mother’s sun. Maybe me having the surgery will get get her to join me on the bandwagon to being healthier.

That is a tuff one, she will quit when she is ready, that much I can tell you.  I quit in 2013 and still love the smell of fresh smoke.  Strange I know but I do.  Maybe you need to go to your room when she steps outside so you don't smell it when she returns.

Not pathetic at all.  I'm originally from Mass.  I grew up in Winchester and lived my 20s through late 30s in Billerica :)  I miss it but I visit every 3 weeks or so for work.

I lived in the Berkshires. :) In Lee to be exact right off the Mass Pike. I hated my job but loved living there and love visiting there too.

Yes.  I quit smoking for the surgery and my fiance still smokes.  There are days it makes me want to yak!
