I have never owned a blender.  Can anyone suggest a brand that is good. I wanted to make my own drinks and smoothies.

The only liquid calories my plan allows is my daily protein shake and, for that, I use something called a Blender Bottle,  Works like a champ.

Thanks, I have one of those my DR. gave  me a book of smoothie recipes.  They suggested I blend crystal light and ice for a treat.

I use mine a lot, so I can appreciate your desire to get a decent one for what you want. I tried most of the big name ones, and here is my take on each:

1. Oster- the typical kitchen model. Leaves ice chunks, in all not good at what you are looking for.

2. Oster- single serve (similar to the Nutribullet) was Ok for convenience, given you take the container with you. Leaves large ice chunks in smoothies. Ugh.

3. Ninja- better by far the options 1 and 2. Still leaves ice chunks big enough to bite. Doesn't pulvarize veggies for a smooth smoothie. Cost effective for the price point if you can afford something better.

4. Vitamix- should have just started with this one! I bought the basic model that has a low and high setting, with a second dial to increase in smaller amounts. LOVE it! Great for smoothies and such, cook soup in it fast and using only fresh veggie, homemade ice cream that you can control  the ingredients on and make weight loss phase friendly, etc. Seriously, it is just plain worth it. I picked it up at either Sams or Costco for I think $349 (not the fancier model). Ended up liking it so much I later bought the second container meant for grinding nuts, coffee, etc.

So, if price is an issue then Ninja (see Sams club for the best price and don't pay over $100 for one that includes the food processor) or the Vitamix.

Here is a question where I feel I actually have something to contribute!!!!!

I bought a blender three years ago after EXTENSIVE research.  I wanted a blender that could make smoothies, slushies, and really good margaritas. There are two very powerful blenders on the market, and each have their own cult following:  Blend-Tec and Vitamix.  I went with the Blend-Tec, and it doubles as a food processor.  Shop around online as they're expensive, but totally worth it.

I have read really good things about Blendtech too. Never used one, but I did notice that either Sams or Costco is now carrying one at a good price.

I got a Black & Decker "personal blender" at Target, it has several single-serving cups with lids that you can blend into-- just like the fancy ninja blenders, but I think it was only about $30.

I used it at first to puree soups, it worked really well to blend protein powder into things when I was in the early stages post-op. I also use it to crush ice and make SF lemonade slushies.

Don't spend a lot .  I bought a special one but really a good old blender works for what your sleeve needs.

I've had 2 Ninja's (different sizes) and they are amazing! Still dreaming of a Vitamix!!

Thank you so much for your input, it really helps a lot.  The book my DR. gave me has a lot of uses for it.  I think my boys will like the blended fruit in the summer an I can stop buying the stuff from the pre frozen section.

Thanks again you guys are a real help.
