Is it a Protein Bar or a Candy Bar?

Hi all!

I ran across this article this morning and thought it was worth sharing. I never did protein bars during weight loss, but have found them helpful on occasion when traveling. I've always been a bit leery of them in general. The article does push one product, but I think the information in the article is worth considering when choosing a protein bar.

I try to stay away from there.  I think real food just works better for me.  These tended to be triggers for me.  

On occassion when in a bind I will have them.  The things I look for in a protein bar are:

  • high protein - 1 gram of protein for each 10 calories
  • low carb / high fiber
  • less than 200 calories 

The quest bar**** these for me.  But I really prefer to have real food.  When I travel far distances I sometimes pack these if I am in a bind.

I find them a bit triggery myself. I will only use Quest Bars, too. I don't find them very filling at all. They are pretty much a slider food, so frankly, I'd rather have 3 oz of chicken and an apple or a salad as a snack. They do work if I'm wanting something treat like though. See, Candy Bar!

My surgeon's rule is 10g protein per 100 cal. Much easier to remember when you're staring at options on a shelf!

With only 3 ingredients in it, I should be making these myself!  I can't handle paying $2 or more for protein bars.

That's why I seldom use them. Only when I travel and I"m worried about getting a decent protein breakfast or afternoon snack.

An OH Yeah small protein bar works great when out and about but I can't bring a whole box home or else they become chocolate bars.

That's me too!  I'm fine if I grab one in a pinch.  But if I buy a box of them, they call to me until they're gone.  Even if I stick to only one as a snack (which is very hard and I'm not usually successful), I am listening to them call my name until they're gone - so not worth it!  I do like Quest Bars, and took them with me when my daughter and I were on the Heritage tour a few months after surgery.  They travelled well and were much better than the very high carb lunches they provided.  I was on a pink cloud back then, so they weren't calling to me then, but they do now.  :)
