I am 18 days post op and I was wondering when everyone started to eat regular food, like maybe some chicken and a salad. Will I be able to try food after a month. I have a family vacation planned at the end of july to the river and I am worried about what I am going to be able to eat. They will be barbecueing hamburgers and hot dogs. Will I be able to have a turkey burger patty. I feel like I am never going to be able to eat again. Need advice.

Hi Kai,

Every surgeon is different in what they want you to eat when.  Give your surgeon's office a call

Agree that every surgical program has their own timeline. Personally I can't eat a "regular diet" until 8 weeks post-op - 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks full liquid, 2 weeks pureed, 2 weeks soft then regular.

Hi Paula,

You have already lost 45 pounds in a month. That is so awesome. Are you on pureed diet right now.

I had regular food after 4 weeks. Just make sure you chew your food very good and take small bites. Good luck!

Don't rush regular food. You will feel normal, but your stomach really isn't ready. It wasn't until about 6 months out (for me anyway) that I could say that I felt comfortable eating regular food again. Take your time, it maybe hard, but believe me, it's worth it. Good luck!

My surgeon does not want me on regular food for 2 more months. He has a patent that ate regular food before the suggested time and she ripped a hole in her stomach. She was in the hospital for 2 months! I am missing regular food right now, but know it will come soon enough =]

Follow your surgeon/NUT advise =] Dont rush anything.

And yes, I am on a pureed diet until May 13th - kinda sucks because Sunday is Mother's Day and my 50th birthday, but I've already decided that I am going have pureed crab legs with alfredo sauce! My real present will be to schedule a massage - need to get used to non-food related celebrations!
