Good morning everyone! How many carbs should I be eating per day pre-op? My doctor just said no bread rice or pasta, and I've followed that but I'm just starting to realize that there's an aweful lot of carbs in other things I've been eating. Thank you everyone!!!

It would be best to call your surgeon and ask - every pre-op diet is different.

Carbs are everywhere! You'll especially learn this after surgery when you have max amounts that you should eat! For pre-op, my surgeon only allowed a 1/2 cup of a grain/pasta/rice once daily with the lean protein. He did, however, allow any amount of veggies. But those are carbs, too!

I agree with Gwen - call your doc and ask! Many surgeons have pre-op and post-op booklets that they give to patients to refer to during the journey!

Best wishes on yours!

Personally, I ate almost none pre-op. 5 or 6g a day! You don't need them, and they won't have a big part of your post-op life, so why not start now? My program didn't prohibit carbs, it just said that we had to eat 1000 calories or less (of whatever). I chose to go low carb and I think I was more successful for it. It certainly is easier to eat 1000 calories that are high fat, low carb than 1000 calories of carbs because you're MUCH less hungry.

Thank you all south for your responses. Even my Atkins shake has 5 carbs in it. I'm just scared that I'm consuming too many. Like today I got a chicken wrap from a local grocery store with everything inside and I just ate the "guts" from it if that makes sense! Lol. & I told my husband that we would prolly not be able to have steak for the next few months so we have had steak and salad almost every night for dinner. I said I want to be sick if steak before my surgery. But there's even carbs in the salad & dressing. I mean, I guess it's minimal compared to what is in bread. When I did Atkins many moons ago I stayed under 5 carbs per day. I essentially ate nothing but hotdogs with mayo and mustard and pepperoni. It was easy too, but I was 16.

I think that people vary a lot in how many carbs they can eat before the carb monster strikes causing cravings.  I'd suggest cutting way back to under 20 per day for a while, and then slowly up them as needed.  When you notice the cravings, you know you've hit your limit.

I kept my carbs very low (under 20 g per day) pre-op and during weight loss.  Once I hit maintenance I found I could tolerate more.  But I am still very concerned that I could get triggered again.

best of luck in your weight loss journey.

When I am on the ball and really going for weight loss I go Atkins or basic hi protein/ low carb and keep my carbs under 20 a day. I always had more than enough to eat because the dense meat has hardly any carbs I could eat lots of it which fills you up and then get in a cup of veggies with my meal and still have hardly any carbs. I would end up stuffed each meal and that was before I had my surgery! So once you are able to get to a regular diet of foods you should have no problem staying full. If you haven't done Atkins in the last several years they have changed it up a bit and they now have a website with recipes and all kinds of good info, so check them out. You can do this easily if you just stick to basic good real food.
