Weight loss before surgery
My doctor suggested doing a protein drink for breakfast and lunch and then a small (lo-carb) dinner. This was a great way to try out the protein drinks you will be using after surgery.
The other suggestion from my doctor was to go all low-carb. (This is what I did and I lost 18 lbs in 5 weeks). I stuck to eating meats with vegies and salads. No bread, pasta, fruit, or other high carb foods. The trick with this is you have to eat this way everyday for at least a week solid to start losing and any day you cheat and eat high carb you basically start the week over. The good thing is you can eat all the meat and vegies you want and you don't have to worry about fats (have the regular salad dressing). Watch out for CORN and PEAS they are higher in carbs.
you just need to measure and track all you food I use myfitnesspal.com
stay below 1200 cal and eat 80 gm of protien and 65 oz of no cal liquid( water tea crystal light )
you need to measure everything very few people can accurately estimate food size
you do not what to do 2 shakes a day now you will get tired of them before you really need them
go solid protien and veggies is the way to go
My surgery date is May 20 and for the last 2 months I have been doing protein shake for breakfast then high protein low carb lunch and dinner. No breads, pastas or sugary food. I stopped all soft drinks also. At this point I don't even crave carbs. Don't losing a lot of weight or anywhere near what my husband has lost but that's one reason that I'm having the sleeve surgery.
I agree with the 1200 calorie diet. And not to do shakes. It's better to start eating now the way you will once you're post op and on regular foods. Lean proteins, veggies and then if you have room starches and fruit. I also lost 18lb in the 6 weeks prior to surgery eating 1200 calories of real food a day. The shakes get old... eat some real (healthy) food now while you can (says me on the 13th day of liquid diet waaaaah!).
I'm 14 months out and I still have a protein shake every day for breakfast.. but I was definitely sick of liquids after 4 weeks of only liquids (pre-op/post-op diets)! However, I still love my morning shake :D

I didn't have any diet requirement from my surgeon or my insurance pre-op. I had surgery in March and, in January, I started replacing "meals I ate by myself" with protein shakes. So this meant that, most days, breakfast and lunch were a shake. I worked on switching dinners to be more protein forward than they had been, but it was nothing super strict.
I lost about 20-25 pounds during those 10 weeks. So that was spiffy.
