heartburn after surgery, but not before surgery

I never had problems before, and didn't have a hernia, and ended up with horrible reflux and heartburn after surgery.  Just because it doesn't happen often doesn't mean it's not true for you!

Take this very, very seriously -- constant reflux and heartburn can lead to esophageal cancer.  Direct link.  It's not going to "go away" by itself any time soon because your stomach is still making the same amount of acid it did for a big stomach.

Call that doctor back and get on a prescription PPI (I take Protonix 40mg daily).  You need the relief for this.  And if you have breakthrough acid you can pop a couple Tums now and then too.

I had surgery in 2001 the roux en y.  Nothing but problems, vomiting almost everyday, ulcers, weight gain.  I went in last week and had a paraesophageal hernia fixed and finally no heartburn, no vomiting, and starting over.  It became sort of a revision procedure.  I was on PPIs for years such as carafate, protonix, levsin, nexium etc.  I did end up with Barrett's esophagus and have to get scoped every two years.  Before this surgery I just had it was about 4 times a year I was being scoped for ulcers.  My esophagus is severely scarred.  Right now I am on a soft food diet.  I don't know how the regular diet is going to go but I feel much better than before, so glad I had this done.  I get to finally go off the protonix in two weeks.

I am 3 weeks out and have been put on a PPI for 6 months to deal with the heartburn that started 2 weeks post-op. I am only two days into it so far and haven't had any relief, so I am using Tums/Rolaids in the meantime to deal with the heartburn. I have NEVER had it before in my life, so it actually took a few days for me to figure out what I was feeling! I am hoping that I will be able to wean off the PPI in the future, but if this is the worst issue I have post-op I'll take it.
