I have the fitbit hr that goes around my wrist. I wear it all the time & it measures my resting heart rate as well as monitors it when I'm working out or just going about my day. It's not too complicated & I can look at the fitbit app to see a chart as to how often I was in 1 zone like fat burning or whatever.
I'm not sure how accurate it is since I have nothing to compare it to other than the polar chest strap that came with my exercise bike. I haven't worn both of them at the same time to get a comparison. I was gonna do that with the apple watch, which is on backorder & crazy expensive.
The fitbit was around $140, it also showed calories burned but I wouldn't depend on those numbers, they're usually as a whole across all devices, inaccurate.

Nope, no problem, but mine is the fitbit hr, there is a watch but I decided not to get it. Besides the hr came in purple. It's my favorite color, & I had to wait for it at that! I'm not sure if the band for the hr is made out of the same material as the watch.
If you go to the fitbit site & ask the community a question about the rash thing, they might have some solutions to solve the problem., otherwise he might have to return the watch, maybe he got a bad batch?

Got one from from Withings over the internet-about $120. You can use it on the wrist band or clip on (both included) I got it in a nice basic black color. It can monitor heart rate, Oxygen level, and activity/calories, it also gives you the time of day.
I also have their scale and wireless blood pressure cuff. All three send the data (via Bluetooth) to an app in my I-Phone. Shows me graphs of my weight, blood pressure, heart rate, etc. and you can enter and track what you eat with the app if you want to do that. The scale does your weight/fat mass and heart rate, also tells you the high/low temp for the day and if it is going to rain (who knew?) and the air quality. My husband and I share the scale and some how it knows the difference between us when we step on it (not sure how). I am not too good with connecting things like this but they have all been very easy to connect and use.
My recommendation, sadly, is on the expensive side. I love my Garmin Vivoactive, which is also a GPS watch for things like running - it was $250. I also have the Garmin heart rate monitor which was $50.
