I was sleeved on Monday (Yea).  I spent a lot of time reading and learning from this site but I don't remember people talking about pain when they sip.  I get a "spasm" in my stomach 30-60 seconds after each sip.  This happens about 80% of the time I sip.  The doctor did find two"issues: in my surgery, stomach polyps and a hiatal hernia.  Is this normal?  Any advice?

Have you tried different temperatures?  You might have better luck with hot/warm liquids than cold/cool ones.

Did not experience that but check size is sips. I know in beginning mine were very small.

Good luck to you

Thanks for the advice.  I'll give both suggestions a try to see if they help.

I was sleeved not even two weeks ago myself. Every time I swallowed for like the first week it felt uncomfortable - like I was swallowing down onto a cloud of gas in my stomach or something. It made my stomach gurgle every time. Is that maybe similar to what you mean? I think it's probably pretty normal. Give your body some time to recover before you start worrying - you just had major surgery. Hugs. :)

PS - I don't feel that uncomfortableness with liquids much anymore, two weeks out, but it's still very uncomfortable/painful swallowing vitamins/pills!

I will be two wks post op tomorrow. I had a lot of spasms when drinking. My doctor told me "don't swallow air  when drinking" and take smaller, more frequent sips. Spasms are gone now, but when I take to big of a sip, feels like I'm swallowing a small ball that is stuck in my chest. Small sips!

I had spasms the first few days, especially with cold liquids. Warm drinks went down easiest (chicken broth, herbal tea) and small sips of plain room temperature water. Every day was a little better, and now that I'm a week out I have no problems drinking cool liquids, although ice cold still hurts so I avoid that for now.

Congratulations! I am two weeks out and found a similar feeling in the first few days.  When I took smaller sips of WARM broth and peppermint tea the feeling was a lot less.  By four or five days out I felt great as long as I was staying with warm stuff.  Two weeks out I still prefer room temperature liquids to cold.  Also, plain water has had a very metallic taste (which I was warned about pre-op) so the little drops of flavors have been a HUGE help!!  Happy healing!  Each day gets better!
