Feels like a slow loss

I am having one of those days where I feel like I'm not nearly losing enough weight. I know we are all different. Fast, slow, ups & downs. I just feel like I'm struggling to lose weight. Like it should be melting. I started at 283 at my 2 week pre-op diet & 264 the day of surgery. I am only down to 230lbs, and tmrw marks 2 months & 1 week post op. So start of surgery I've only lost 34lbs, and 53 if I want to count pre-op. I just feel like I should be down so much more. I get 600-800 cals a day, 70-80gms of protein, under 40grams of carbs, 80-100oz of water. I exercise 4-5x a week 30min-1hr. Just feeling like a let down. I know, continue on my journey of course, but its just hard when I dont see it within myself. Like I should be better.

I know the feeling! And its even worse for me now since I broke my foot and I can't weigh "accurately" because I'm unsure of how much my cast weighs. For me, I'm not the fastest loser... I stay on plan, but since my start weight was comparatively "low" and I have less to lose than some others, that's just how it goes. I'm a stair step loser; a few lbs in a row then were ounces for a week or two- but my average by the numbers is about 2.6lbs a week. Meh- but i'll take it!!

When I ran your figures, including pre-op you average 4.8lbs a week... counting post-op time only, 3.7- that's amazing!!

You can always find someone who loses faster or slower than you do, and it's all relative so in know it doesn't help much when you're feeling "slow". But the numbers help me put it into perspectives sometimes, when I'm emotionally open to logic lol.

You're doing great

At some point, I think everyone feels like a "slow loser." In reality, most people are pretty average. You can see from my signature that you've lost almost exactly what I lost in my first two months post-op and I don't consider my loss particularly slow. Were there times when I wished I was losing faster? Of course. Are there people who lost faster? Sure. There always is.

There's only one thing to be done: keep on keepin' on and try as you might to keep "only" out of your weight loss vocabulary.

Hey Molly H.!

I completely understand your viewpoint. I don't think it's a helpful outlook for you, though. So I'm going to encourage you to look at some things from a different angle.

First, when was the last time that you lost 53 pounds in under 3 months? I'm going to guess, never, unless you've done one of those drastic liquid fast diets.

Second, I'm a guy and I lost about 20 pounds pre op, then 23 pounds the first month and then about 12 pounds the second month. Pretty much, just like you!

Third, it seems to me like you are stuck in a diet mentality. If you want this to be a highly successful journey, try starting to look at what you are doing as a conscious life change. Fixating on the weight (which is very hard not to do, I know) might be bringing you down too much. Try focusing instead on your behavior changes. Those are also measurable! Did you get all your water? Did you meet protein goals? did you move today? Did you try something new physically this week? Things like that will help you focus more on the positive changes, rather than just on the number on the scale.

I'm not saying to not stay the path, but maybe change the focus and be a little kinder to yourself and your body.

You are losing at the same rate as I am. I don't consider this rate slow at all. Before surgery I could diet for months and only lose a pound a month at most. I am thrilled! :-) Kay
